Real-Time Embedded Software Engineer

Carnegie Mellon University•Pittsburgh, PA
•Onsite

About The Position

The SEI is seeking an experienced real-time embedded engineer to work on safety-critical embedded software. The role involves working with a range of software and hardware systems, including bare-metal embedded systems, RTOSes, FPGAs, and embedded Linux. The engineer will develop tools, techniques, and processes to address difficult software problems faced by government customers. The position focuses on understanding complex, interdependent embedded systems across multiple abstraction levels and system interfaces; developing tools and capabilities to analyze, test, and evaluate existing software; and applying systems engineering knowledge to identify and communicate weaknesses in embedded functionality by tracing implementations to requirements. The engineer will use analysis and testing methods to uncover software weaknesses, security vulnerabilities, and poor engineering decisions in safety-critical systems. The role also includes research, experimentation, and knowledge sharing to improve software development processes and understanding of system-of-systems integration and performance. The position is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and requires working 100% onsite at an SEI or customer facility. Travel of 25% is expected. Candidates must be able to pass a background check and obtain and maintain an active Department of War security clearance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline with eight years of experience; or a master’s degree in one of these fields with five years of experience; or a Ph.D. in one of these fields with two years of experience.
  • Experience working in a collaborative team environment as a software developer, software engineer, verification engineer, or in a related field.
  • Proficiency in one or more of C, C++, VHDL, Verilog, Python, or C#.
  • Experience building, analyzing, debugging, and/or testing bare-metal systems, and familiarity with a CMSIS, HAL, or specific peripheral driver.
  • Experience with FPGAs and/or heterogeneous computing boards requiring communication and synchronization between specialized hardware or chips.
  • Exposure to modern RTOSes, such as VxWorks or Integrity, and experience developing and analyzing embedded software.
  • Experience with common embedded interfaces and protocols, such as I2C, CAN, SPI, RS-232, or RS-422.
  • Experience developing embedded software and performance tests and interpreting the results.
  • Understanding of the Department of War Systems Engineering lifecycle.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to convey difficult engineering or technical challenges to stakeholders.
  • Willingness to work 100% onsite at an SEI or customer facility.
  • Ability to pass a background check and obtain and maintain an active Department of War security clearance.
  • Willingness to travel 25% outside the office location to other SEI offices, sponsor sites, conferences, and offsite meetings.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with one or more of Java, Go, Rust, Ada, or MATLAB.
