Real-Time Embedded Software Engineer

Carnegie Mellon University•Pittsburgh, PA
•Onsite

About The Position

SEI is seeking an experienced real-time embedded engineer to work on safety-critical embedded software. The role involves working with bare-metal embedded systems, real-time operating systems, FPGAs, and embedded Linux, and developing tools, techniques, and processes to address difficult software problems for government customers. The position focuses on understanding complex, interdependent embedded systems across multiple abstraction levels and interfaces; analyzing, testing, and evaluating existing software; and identifying weaknesses in embedded functionality by tracing implementations to requirements. The engineer will use static analysis, dynamic testing, and complexity analysis to uncover software weaknesses, security vulnerabilities, and poor engineering practices, helping improve system robustness, reliability, and engineering soundness. The role also includes research, experimentation, and knowledge-sharing to improve software development processes and understanding of system-of-systems integration and performance. The position is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and requires working 100% onsite at the SEI or a customer facility, with travel of approximately 25%.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline and eight years of experience; or a master’s degree in the same fields and five years of experience; or a Ph.D. in the same fields and two years of experience.
  • Experience working collaboratively as a software developer, software engineer, verification engineer, or in a related field.
  • Proficiency in one or more of C, C++, VHDL, Verilog, Python, or C#.
  • Experience building, analyzing, debugging, and/or testing bare-metal systems, and familiarity with a CMSIS, HAL, or specific peripheral driver.
  • Experience with one or more of Java, Go, Rust, Ada, or MATLAB.
  • Experience with FPGAs and/or heterogeneous computing boards requiring communication and synchronization between specialized hardware or chips.
  • Exposure to modern RTOSes, such as VxWorks or Integrity, and experience developing and analyzing embedded software.
  • Experience with common embedded interfaces and protocols such as I2C, CAN, SPI, RS-232, or RS-422.
  • Experience developing embedded software and performance tests and interpreting their results.
  • Understanding of the Department of War Systems Engineering lifecycle.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to convey difficult engineering or technical challenges to stakeholders.
  • Willingness to work 100% onsite at the SEI or a customer facility.
  • Ability to pass a background check and obtain and maintain an active Department of War security clearance.
  • Willingness to travel 25% outside the office location to other SEI offices, sponsor sites, conferences, and offsite meetings.

Responsibilities

  • Understand complex, interdependent embedded systems across multiple abstraction levels and system interfaces.
  • Design and develop embedded software tools and capabilities to analyze, test, and evaluate existing software.
  • Apply systems engineering knowledge to identify and communicate weaknesses and flawed implementations of embedded functionality, tracing findings from requirements.
  • Use static analysis, dynamic testing, and complexity analysis tools to identify software weaknesses, security vulnerabilities, and poor engineering practices.
  • Conduct research and experimentation to enhance software development processes and demonstrate analytical capabilities.
  • Present knowledge-sharing initiatives to foster understanding of system-of-systems integration and performance.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive health insurance, including medical, prescription, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Tuition benefits for the employee and dependent children to attend Carnegie Mellon University.
  • Generous paid time off and observed holidays.
  • Retirement savings program with an 8% monthly employer contribution that does not require an employee contribution.
  • Paid parental and military leave.
  • Relocation assistance for eligible employees.
  • Life and accidental death and disability insurance.
  • Free Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus pass.
  • Access to childcare support through the Family Concierge Team.
  • Access to campus fitness facilities and mindfulness programs.
  • Annual professional development opportunities.
