Embedded Software Engineer, Real-Time Embedded

Maven Robotics•Santa Clara, CA

About The Position

As an Embedded Software Engineer at Maven Robotics, you will develop foundational software for the company’s robots, including core systems that support robust, safe, and deterministic operation. You will adapt and integrate a safety-certifiable real-time operating system (RTOS) and drivers for purpose-built robotic control hardware, and work with hardware and functional safety engineers to develop and optimize safety-critical systems and meet relevant standards. The role also includes developing device drivers, real-time performance tools, reproducible build and test infrastructure, and strategies for over-the-air updates, calibration management, and software deployment. You will solve real-world challenges as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with safety-certifiable RTOSes such as PX5, ThreadX, or SafeRTOS, and strong knowledge of real-time scheduling and memory management.
  • Strong understanding of ARM64 architecture, multicore SoCs, interprocess/intercore communication, and atomic operations.
  • Production experience with communication protocols such as Ethernet, EtherCAT, or CAN.
  • Proficiency in low-level programming, including C and assembly, bootloaders, hardware abstraction layers, and board support packages.
  • Hands-on experience with hardware debugging and development tools, including oscilloscopes, hardware debuggers, high-speed tracing, and software toolchains.
  • Familiarity with functional safety, MISRA compliance, and related standards.
  • Self-driven problem-solving, strong prioritization skills, and ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of ARM SIMD/NEON architecture extensions.
  • Proficiency in additional programming languages such as C++, Python, Rust, or Golang.
  • Experience with multi-language build systems such as Bazel or Bob.
  • Familiarity with ROS 2 middleware and alternatives such as FastDDS, CycloneDDS, or Zenoh.
  • Experience with Docker and related containerization tools.

Responsibilities

  • Adapt and integrate a safety-certifiable RTOS and associated drivers for purpose-built robotic control hardware.
  • Collaborate with hardware engineers to design, develop, and optimize high-performance safety-critical systems.
  • Develop and adapt device drivers for hardware peripherals such as GPIO, EtherCAT, and SPI.
  • Build tools to monitor, verify, and optimize real-time system performance and ensure deterministic behavior.
  • Contribute to a deterministic and reproducible build and test environment.
  • Collaborate with functional safety engineers to support compliance with relevant safety standards, audits, and traceability requirements.
  • Develop robust solutions for over-the-air updates, calibration management, and software deployment strategies.
  • Solve complex, real-world challenges alongside a multidisciplinary team.
