Real-Time Embedded Software Engineer

Software Engineering Institute | Carnegie Mellon University•Pittsburgh, PA
•Onsite

About The Position

SEI is seeking an experienced real-time embedded engineer to work on safety-critical embedded software. The role involves working with bare-metal embedded systems, RTOSes, FPGAs, and embedded Linux, and developing tools, techniques, and processes to address complex software challenges for government customers. The engineer will analyze complex, interdependent embedded systems across multiple abstraction levels and system interfaces. They will design and develop tools and capabilities to analyze, test, and evaluate existing software; apply systems engineering knowledge to identify and communicate weaknesses in embedded functionality; and use analysis and testing techniques to improve the robustness, reliability, and engineering soundness of safety-critical systems. The role also includes research, experimentation, and knowledge sharing focused on software development processes and system-of-systems integration and performance. The position is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and requires working 100% onsite at the SEI or a customer facility. Travel of approximately 25% is expected. The position is full-time and regular staff employment.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline and eight years of experience; or a master's degree in the same fields and five years of experience; or a Ph.D. in the same fields and two years of experience.
  • Experience working in a collaborative team environment as a software developer, software engineer, verification engineer, or in a related field.
  • Proficiency in one or more of C, C++, VHDL, Verilog, Python, or C#.
  • Experience building, analyzing, debugging, and/or testing bare-metal systems, and familiarity with a CMSIS, HAL, or specific peripheral driver.
  • Experience with one or more of Java, Go, Rust, Ada, or MATLAB.
  • Experience with FPGAs and/or heterogeneous computing boards requiring communication and synchronization between specialized hardware or chips.
  • Exposure to modern RTOSes such as VxWorks or Integrity, and experience developing and analyzing embedded software.
  • Experience with common embedded interfaces and protocols such as I2C, CAN, SPI, RS-232, or RS-422.
  • Experience developing embedded software and performance tests and interpreting their results.
  • Understanding of the Department of War (DoW) systems engineering lifecycle.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to explain difficult engineering or technical challenges to stakeholders.
  • Willingness to work 100% onsite at an SEI or customer facility.
  • Ability to pass a background check and obtain and maintain an active Department of War security clearance.
  • Willingness to travel 25% outside the office location to SEI offices, sponsor sites, conferences, and offsite meetings.

Responsibilities

  • Understand complex, interdependent embedded systems across multiple abstraction levels and system interfaces.
  • Design and develop embedded software tools and capabilities to analyze, test, and evaluate existing software.
  • Apply systems engineering knowledge to identify and communicate weaknesses and flawed implementations of embedded functionality, tracing findings from requirements.
  • Use static analysis, dynamic testing, and complexity analysis tools to uncover software weaknesses, security vulnerabilities, and poor engineering practices.
  • Guide safety-critical systems toward robustness, reliability, and engineering soundness.
  • Conduct research and experimentation to enhance software development processes and demonstrate analytical capabilities.
  • Present knowledge-sharing initiatives that foster understanding of system-of-systems integration and performance.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive health insurance.
  • Tuition benefits, including benefits for classes at Carnegie Mellon University for employees and dependent children.
  • Generous time off.
  • Retirement savings policy, including an 8% monthly employer contribution without requiring an employee contribution.
  • Annual professional development opportunities.
  • Campus fitness facilities and mindfulness programs.
  • Childcare resources.
  • Free transportation on the Port Authority Transit System.
  • Paid parental leave and military leave.
