About The Position

OpenLiteracy is seeking passionate, certified educators to join their tutoring team and make a difference in children's literacy outcomes. The organization aims to improve reading proficiency, as 40% of fourth graders in the country read below grade level. OpenLiteracy offers a curriculum grounded in the Science of Reading, intervention support, and individualized tutoring. Tutors will work 1:1 with students in grades K-6 through a secure online platform using a provided curriculum, with no lesson planning required. Sessions are 25 minutes long, and tutors are matched with the same students over time to build trusting relationships. The role emphasizes balancing explicit instruction with meaningful engagement and weaving comprehension into every step.

Requirements

  • Current or expired K–6 teaching certification (must be able to provide a copy).
  • K-6 classroom teaching experience with a focus on reading.
  • Strong grounding in the Science of Reading: phonics, structured literacy, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension instruction.
  • Able to provide at least 3 hours of consistent availability Monday-Thursday during peak hours (10:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. ET), minimum 4 days/week.
  • Able to commit to at least 10 consistent hours per week.
  • U.S. work authorization, U.S. mailing address, and ability to receive U.S. bank deposits.
  • Reliable computer with camera and microphone, high-speed internet, and a quiet workspace.
  • Candidates cannot be based in California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, or New Jersey.
