About The Position

This is a talent pool posting for a Reading Tutor position with OpenLiteracy. By applying, candidates will be evaluated and added to a pool of qualified tutors from which OpenLiteracy draws on a rolling basis as new tutoring positions become available. Candidates accepted into the pool will be contacted directly when a match is identified. OpenLiteracy's mission is to improve reading outcomes for fourth graders, with 40% currently reading below grade level. They offer products and services including a reading curriculum based on the Science of Reading, Tier 2 intervention support, and Tier 3 individualized tutoring. The role involves working 1-on-1 with students in grades K-6 through a secure online platform using a provided curriculum, with no lesson planning required. Sessions are 25 minutes long, and tutors will work with the same students over time to build trusting relationships. Successful tutors balance explicit instruction with meaningful engagement and comprehension.

Requirements

  • Current or expired K–6 teaching certification (must be able to provide a copy).
  • K-6 classroom teaching experience with a focus on reading.
  • Strong grounding in the Science of Reading: phonics, structured literacy, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension instruction.
  • Able to provide at least 3 hours of consistent availability Monday-Thursday during peak hours (10:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. ET), minimum 4 days/week.
  • Able to commit to at least 10 consistent hours per week.
  • U.S. work authorization, U.S. mailing address, and ability to receive U.S. bank deposits.
  • Reliable computer with camera and microphone, high-speed internet, and a quiet workspace.
  • Candidates cannot be based in California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, or New Jersey.

Responsibilities

  • Work 1:1 with students in grades K-6 through a secure online platform.
  • Utilize a curriculum designed by OpenLiteracy.
  • Build rapport and maximize instruction for one student at a time.
  • Work with the same students consistently over time.
  • Balance explicit instruction with meaningful engagement with text.
  • Weave comprehension into every step of the tutoring process.
