About The Position

Reading Corps is hiring a Reading Tutor to support students at Schurz Elementary during the 2026–27 school year. Tutors help students improve their reading skills by delivering trained, evidence-based activities and providing encouragement as students build skills and confidence. Tutors meet with pairs of students for 20-minute reading-practice sessions throughout each school day, following a schedule until all assigned students have been served. Training and ongoing coaching are provided.

The position runs from August 2026 through June 2027. Full-time schedules are 35 hours per week, with fewer hours during weeks that include holidays or school release days. Hours are during the daytime and correspond with school start and end times, Monday through Friday. Part-time positions of 25 hours per week are also available. Full-time AmeriCorps members receive a stipend paycheck every two weeks; stipend amounts and education awards are described on the organization’s careers page.

Requirements

• Be dependable and have a history of good attendance.
• Be able to follow instructions and improve based on feedback.
• Have basic computer skills, including using email and navigating online.
• Be fluent in spoken and written English, including reading.
• Be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent by the time service begins.
• Be a U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident.
• Successfully complete a background check.

Responsibilities

• Provide caring support focused on helping children thrive.
• Lead reading tutoring sessions and follow a schedule to ensure students receive support.
• Track student progress and meet regularly with the school's on-site coach.
• Conduct skill assessments and enter student scores into data software.
• Participate in coaching and training to support continued growth.
• Share the tutoring experience with the community.
