About The Position

The major role of this Reading Specialist is to provide a comprehensive reading approach to secondary special education students with reading difficulties. Two positions are available.

Requirements

  • Current DESE licensure as either Reading Specialist (all levels), Special Education Teacher (5-12), or English (5-12).
  • Certification in reading intervention systems such as Wilson Reading or Orton Gillingham
  • Experience with progress monitoring and report writing
  • Experience in conducting comprehensive reading evaluations and assessments
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong fundamental knowledge of how students learn to read and comprehend at the secondary level
  • Ability to collect, analyze and synthesize assessment data
  • Efficient and effective use of technology for work processing and data analysis

Responsibilities

  • Provide a scientifically researched based reading program or system (such as Wilson Reading or Orton Gillingham) to students with reading disabilities.
  • Administer and analyze assessment results and use the data to plan appropriate instruction for individual or small groups of students.
  • Implement reading interventions with fidelity for special education students.
  • Regularly communicate student progress to teachers and families.
  • Consult with teachers, Special Education Coordinators, administrators, and parents concerning reading issues and ideas.
  • Maintain frequent progress monitoring of student work and share results with families and stakeholders.
  • Provide support to families, so they can support their child’s development in literacy.
  • Meet in regularly scheduled meetings with the Special Education Coordinator, building leaders, and/or other reading teachers.
  • Perform such other duties and assume such other responsibilities as the Principal or designee assigns.
