About The Position

The Reading Specialist will be responsible for preparing class assignments, providing an effective program of instruction in accordance with curriculum and student needs, and attending faculty and team meetings. This role involves cooperating with staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods, and establishing positive professional relationships. The specialist will assist in selecting instructional materials, exploring and implementing curriculum and teaching strategies, and supporting district and building goals. Encouraging parent involvement and maintaining good relationships with parents is also a key aspect. The role requires maintaining records as required by law and district policy, and implementing the requirements of IDEA, Sec. 504, and ADA for students with disabilities. Other duties as assigned may also be part of the role.

Requirements

  • Valid Washington State teacher's certificate with endorsement in Reading
  • Satisfactory evaluations
  • Completion of Safe Schools web-based training is required as a condition of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with CKLA English Language Arts curriculum.
  • Experience with Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS) - Academics
  • Experience with small group remedial reading instruction.
  • Ability to coordinate and supervise reading program K-5.
  • Ability to collect and analyze a variety of assessment data.
  • Evidence of successful experience of planning for and implementation of elementary classroom instruction.
  • Evidence of recent successful experience working with at risk readers.
  • Evidence of recent course work in areas of reading/language arts, social skills and science.
  • Evidence of successful communication with school staff, parents and students.
  • Experience working effectively with a broad range of ability levels using developmentally appropriate methods and expectations.
  • Curriculum integration experience and ability to work with a team of teachers in creating and implementing new curricular programs.
  • Experience and willingness to incorporate GLAD and UDL instructional strategies.
  • Willingness to participate in parent meetings.
  • Training and/or experience using computers as an instructional tool.
  • Experience in administering various tests - CORE, RAN, STAR assessments using a rubric, etc.
  • Evidence of successful utilization of positive classroom management strategies
  • Training and/ or experience with CORE Reading Academy.
  • Training and/ or experience with ECRI.
  • Training and/ or experience with state reporting. For example, Time and Effort Reports.
  • Training or experience with creating and maintaining a Rank Order.
  • Punctual and consistent attendance.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare class assignments and show written evidence upon request of immediate supervisor.
  • Provide an effective program of instruction in accordance with curriculum and consistent with physical limitations of the location provided and needs and capabilities of individual or student groups involved.
  • Attend and participate in faculty and team meetings.
  • Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives and methods.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and positive professional relationships with other members.
  • Assist in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials.
  • Explore and implement different curriculum and teaching strategies as identified through building/grade level adoption process.
  • Support district and building goals by participating in planning, training, implementing and evaluating effectiveness of programs, grants and curriculum and teaching methodologies that school participates in.
  • Encourage parent involvement, participate in parent involvement activities and maintain good relationships with parents.
  • Maintain records as required by Federal and State law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Implement the requirements of IDEA, Sec. 504 and ADA in the education of students with disabilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
