About The Position

The Reading Intervention Specialist is a reading-endorsed teacher of reading who works specifically with K-8 students who require strategic and intensive intervention. The focus of the intervention specialist is to develop a student-centered system of intervention that effectively works to close the achievement gap in reading. The goal of the intervention specialist is to ensure that the students are able to master grade-level standards and curriculum by instructing students not meeting state reading standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education
  • Arizona Standard Professional Teaching Certificate
  • Reading Endorsement Required
  • Experience teaching K-8 students
  • Experience working with individual teachers and site-based teams
  • Experience and training in administering assessments and analyzing data to drive instruction
  • A proven track record of instructing diverse learners, including English Language Learners and Special Education students, in the area of reading

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree preferred
  • three to five years of experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of Scientifically Based Reading Research (SBRR) and Scientifically Based Reading Instruction (SBRI) specifically related to K-8 students.
  • Understands the purpose and components of core reading programs, supplemental materials, and intervention programs.
  • Understands how to collaboratively plan with K-8 staff to effectively use and implement adopted core reading program, supplemental materials, and intervention programs.
  • Understands direct, explicit systematic reading instruction that is aligned with SBRR.
  • Understands and interprets assessment data such as DIBELS, TerraNova, Galileo, and AIMS, as well as running records and other informal assessment data, to guide instructional decisions and flexible student grouping.
  • Understands how to use technology for instructional planning, i.e. creating reports and using data to plan lessons.
  • Use instructional decisions that are based on data analysis
  • Effectively use direct, explicit, systematic reading instruction that is aligned with SBRR.
  • Design effective intervention lessons.
  • Use published SBRR intervention programs, from the district’s Menu of Services, to accelerate student learning.
  • Continuously monitor the progress of students receiving intervention services, in order to adjust instructional practice and student grouping.
  • Communicate and collaborate with classroom teachers regarding alignment between classroom instruction and intervention.
  • Use technology for planning instruction and assessment analysis
  • Integrate Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol strategies in small-group instruction
  • Attend District and school site-sponsored trainings
  • Train paraprofessionals in effective instructional practice and the components of the intervention program.
  • Support the site-level School-Wide Plan through facilitation and/or participation at in-services, grade-level team meetings, and staff meetings.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, coaches, and contracted consultants.
  • Prepare monthly progress report(s).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
