About The Position

The Reading Interventionist provides targeted, evidence-based reading instruction and intervention to students who demonstrate deficiencies in foundational literacy skills. The Reading Interventionist works collaboratively with teachers, administrators, families, and support staff to improve student achievement through structured literacy practices aligned with Missouri Learning Standards, Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) requirements, Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), and the Science of Reading framework. The Reading Interventionist supports students in developing foundational reading skills including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and written language development necessary for academic success.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field required.
  • Valid Missouri Teaching Certificate required.
  • Missouri DESE Reading Certification, Reading Specialist Certification, or Special Reading Teacher Certification preferred or required based on assignment.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of successful classroom teaching experience preferred.
  • Experience providing reading intervention services preferred.
  • Experience working in an urban educational setting preferred.
  • Bilingual skills in English and Spanish preferred.
  • Reading Assessment and Data Analysis: Knowledge of literacy assessments, diagnostic tools, and progress-monitoring systems. Ability to analyze reading achievement data and use findings to guide instructional decisions. Ability to identify students requiring Tier II and Tier III interventions.
  • Literacy Instruction: Knowledge of evidence-based reading instruction aligned with the Science of Reading. Understanding of structured literacy instructional practices. Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners. Knowledge of dyslexia characteristics and effective intervention strategies preferred.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, administrators, intervention teams, and families. Strong verbal, written, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all situations.
  • Diverse Learners: Understanding of instructional supports for emergent bilingual students, students with disabilities, and students with varying academic needs. Commitment to culturally responsive instructional practices and educational equity.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of LETRS, AIM Pathways, or other DESE-approved Science of Reading training preferred.
  • Bilingual skills in English and Spanish preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide evidence-based reading interventions to individual students and small groups using structured literacy practices aligned with the Science of Reading.
  • Deliver targeted instruction in: Phonemic awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, Reading comprehension, Written language skills
  • Support implementation of the schoolwide reading intervention program and MTSS framework.
  • Administer literacy screeners, diagnostic assessments, and progress-monitoring tools to identify student needs and monitor growth.
  • Analyze student achievement data to determine intervention placement, instructional goals, and intervention effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, instructional staff, special education staff, and administrators to support literacy growth and intervention planning.
  • Assist classroom teachers in implementing evidence-based reading strategies and differentiated literacy instruction.
  • Participate in problem-solving teams, MTSS meetings, Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, and student support meetings as requested.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and timely records of student interventions, assessments, and progress in accordance with district, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Utilize instructional technology, intervention programs, and supplemental reading materials effectively to support student learning.
  • Support family engagement efforts by communicating student progress and providing literacy resources and strategies when appropriate.
  • Participate in ongoing professional learning related to literacy instruction, dyslexia awareness, structured literacy, culturally responsive practices, and intervention strategies.
  • Model professionalism, collaboration, and effective instructional practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
