About The Position

Reporting to a Project Engineering Director, the Fuel Channel and Fuel Handling Engineering Manager leads a technical team responsible for delivering commercial and internal engineering work packages related to reactor systems, components, and supporting technologies. The role oversees engineering execution across design, assessment, inspection, fitness‑for‑service, and lifecycle management activities within the fuel channel and fuel handling discipline and closely related reactor core engineering domains.

Requirements

  • University degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) registration with PEO or equivalent, where applicable.
  • Formal project management experience required; PMP or equivalent certification is considered a strong asset.
  • Approximately 15 years of progressive mechanical engineering experience in safety‑critical systems within regulated industrial environments.
  • Minimum 5 years of direct nuclear engineering experience, preferably involving CANDU fuel channels, reactor core systems, or equivalent nuclear pressure boundary components.
  • Experience with design verification, assessment reports, technical specifications, engineering calculations, configuration control, inspection programs, and ageing management.
  • Deep specialization in fuel channels is considered a strong asset but is not mandatory, provided the candidate demonstrates strong nuclear engineering judgment and leadership capability.
  • Proven capability managing engineering delivery (scope, cost, schedule, resources, and risk) in complex project environments.
  • Strong knowledge of nuclear codes and standards including CSA N285, ASME Section III, CSA N286, and nuclear QA programs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with clients, regulators, and multidisciplinary engineering groups.

Nice To Haves

  • PMP or equivalent certification is considered a strong asset.
  • Deep specialization in fuel channels is considered a strong asset

Responsibilities

  • Approves technical documents - including analyses, design changes, inspection plans, and fitness‑for‑service evaluations - prepared by staff within the fuel channel engineering team.
  • Plans and executes engineering work consistent with nuclear quality, cost, and schedule requirements, ensuring alignment with CSA, CNSC, and internal governance.
  • Removes barriers that could impact deliverables, collaborating with staff to identify technical solutions, risk mitigations, and optimization opportunities specific to fuel channel performance and reliability.
  • Works with marketing, business development, and corporate groups to maintain and enhance client relationships, particularly with utilities and operators of CANDU or similar reactor technologies.
  • Ensures all engineering activities comply with applicable Engineering and Quality Assurance procedures, including those governing safety ‑ critical systems.
  • Ensures all design and assessment work is executed effectively, with appropriate peer reviews, independent verifications, and design authority engagement to meet project and regulatory requirements.
  • Fosters a collaborative team environment within Engineering and with internal and external stakeholders, including utilities, OEMs, regulators, and inspection service providers.
  • Oversees cost, timeliness, quality, and technical adequacy of fuel channel engineering deliverables through structured reviews and performance evaluations.
  • Works with Project Management to plan work, allocate resources, assign tasks, and report progress against deliverables.
  • Implements planning, scheduling, and tracking of engineering activities, commitments, costs, and labor resources for fuel channel programs.
  • Interfaces with clients to deliver engineering products - such as channel assessment reports, tooling requirements, inspection data interpretations, and lifecycle management strategies - in accordance with customer specifications.
  • Establishes the technical approach for fuel channel engineering projects, ensuring designs and assessments satisfy functional, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Manages configuration control of design documents, models, and assessment tools in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Ensures security access requirements, including need‑to‑know protocols, are implemented on all projects involving sensitive nuclear information.
  • Leads a team specializing in reactor component engineering or closely related reactor core disciplines.
  • Conduct performance reviews, set objectives, and support staff development and succession planning.
  • Manages human resources issues within the team, ensuring timely and effective resolution.
  • Provides day‑to‑day interpretation and application of negotiated agreements with bargaining agents as they relate to employee rights, obligations, and working conditions.
  • Create and sustain a collaborative, accountable, and supportive team environment with strong safety culture.
  • Maintains a capability profile of the team, including individual experience in fuel channel design, inspection, analysis, and lifecycle management.
  • Ensures the team maintains an appropriate combination of technical skills - such as fracture mechanics, materials science, inspection technology, and nuclear safety analysis - to meet forecasted project needs.
  • Identifies gaps in team size or technical capability and supports plans to close those gaps through hiring, training, development, or strategic resourcing.
  • Mentors, coaches, and develops the team, fostering knowledge transfer and a strong technical community within the fuel channel discipline.
