About The Position

We are seeking a Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) responsible for ensuring on-site roadway worker protection near railroad tracks. This role involves precise job site coordination, clear communication with dispatchers and train operators, and consistent application of On-Track Safety procedures. The position requires extensive travel across Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas, with frequent overnight stays.

Requirements

  • Ability to meet physical demands and perform required tasks effectively.
  • Capability to warn roadway workers of approaching trains.
  • Understanding of on-track safety training and qualification required for roadway workers.
  • Proficiency in radio procedures for communication between RWIC/EICs and work groups.
  • Competence in conducting job briefings with roadway workers at their work location.
  • Ability to place railroad advance warning and stop signs.
  • Skill in installing a railroad derail and applying the locking device.
  • Proficiency with electronic communications, including email, text, and standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience as a RWIC (BNSF Qualifications).
  • 15+ years of service as an RWIC while employed by a Class I or Class II freight railroad (Non-BNSF Experience).
  • Successful outcome of pre-employment and recurring background checks, and drug and alcohol testing.
  • Successful completion of classroom and field training, including assessments.
  • Successful completion of all onboarding and recurring training requirements is mandatory for continued employment.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure accurate and error-free jobsite protection for each assignment, including radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers.
  • Ensure work groups are clear of limits during train movements and grant permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed through limits.
  • Conduct daily job briefings with all personnel on-site, ensuring compliance with railroad safety requirements.
  • Prepare and submit required electronic forms, including job set-up forms, daily work reports, invoices, and other necessary reports.
  • Handle and place signs, derail, and other tools and equipment weighing between 15 to 90 pounds.
  • Actively participate in routine safety classes and qualification training.
  • Maintain high levels of communication with RWIC supervisors and managers regarding assignments and schedules.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned to meet business needs.
