This position, a Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC), is responsible for providing on-site roadway worker protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks. The role requires precise job site coordination, clear dispatcher/train communication, and consistent application of On-Track Safety procedures in both controlled and non-controlled track areas. It involves routine and extensive travel across multiple states including Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming, requiring frequent overnight stays. Candidates must be adaptable to changing work environments and schedules while maintaining a strong commitment to safety and operational excellence.

Requirements

Ability to meet physical demands and perform required tasks effectively.
Capability to warn roadway workers of approaching trains.
Understanding of on-track safety training and qualification required for roadway workers.
Proficiency in radio procedures for communication between RWIC/EICs (Employee in Charge) and work groups.
Competence in conducting job briefings with roadway workers at their work location.
Ability to place railroad advance warnings and stop signs.
Skill in installing a railroad derail and applying the locking device.
Proficiency with electronic communications, including email, text, and standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
Minimum of 10 years of experience as a RWIC (for BNSF Qualifications).
Employment is contingent upon the successful outcome of pre-employment and recurring background checks, and drug and alcohol testing, as well as classroom and field training, including assessments.
Successful completion of all onboarding and recurring training requirements is mandatory for continued employment.
15+ years of service as an RWIC while employed by a Class I or Class II freight railroad (for Non-BNSF Experience).

Responsibilities

Ensure accurate and error-free jobsite protection for each assignment, including radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers, ensuring work groups are clear of limits during train movements, and granting permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed through limits.
Conduct daily job briefings with all personnel on-site, ensuring compliance with railroad safety requirements.
Prepare and submit required electronic forms, including job set-up forms for each flagging assignment, daily work reports, invoices, and other necessary reports.
Handle and place signs, derail, and other tools and equipment weighing between 15 to 90 pounds as needed throughout the day.
Actively participate in routine safety classes and qualification training.
Maintain high levels of communication with RWIC supervisors and managers regarding assignments and schedules.
Perform other tasks as assigned to meet business needs.
