About The Position

The Railcar Repair Tech is responsible for inspecting freight railcars and making minor repairs while they are in service or on short dwell time. The role involves identifying defects, performing safe and efficient repairs, and ensuring compliance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Association of American Railroads (AAR), and company standards. The position is full-time and pays $21.58 to $34.00 per hour.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Basic knowledge of FRA and AAR inspection and repair requirements.
• Ability to safely operate hand and power tools.
• Ability to read and interpret work orders, repair manuals, and regulatory standards.
• Strong attention to detail and situational awareness.
• Good communication skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
• Must pass all required safety and regulatory training.
• Valid driver's license and clean driving record.

Nice To Haves

• Prior experience in mechanical railcar repair or inspection.
• CDL, or willingness to obtain one if applicable.

Responsibilities

• Perform visual and manual inspections of freight railcars to identify mechanical defects, damage, or wear.
• Perform minor running repairs, including replacing brake shoes, adjusting rigging, repairing safety appliances, and replacing gaskets or fittings.
• Identify and document defects according to FRA and AAR rules, and determine whether railcars can remain in service or must be bad ordered.
• Complete inspection reports, repair records, defect tags, and other required documentation.
• Operate tools and equipment such as impact wrenches, hydraulic jacks, grinders, and torches.
• Coordinate car movements and repair access with yardmasters, dispatchers, and other railroad personnel.
• Maintain a clean, organized work area and keep tools and equipment in proper working condition.
• Follow company safety rules, procedures, and policies, including use of PPE and Lockout/Tagout when necessary.
