About The Position

This position is responsible for maintaining a safe environment and ensuring compliance with all railroad rules, procedures, and regulations for safety, operations, AAR, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). The role involves repairing, maintaining, and inspecting freight car equipment and automotive pool equipment. Key duties include performing all preventative maintenance and repairs on trucks, underframe, structure, safety appliances, braking systems, and draft systems, along with associated tests according to AAR, ERA, and company regulations. The mechanic will record conditions of cars and repair/maintenance work performed or to be performed, assist with re-railing activities, and collaborate with other departments at derailment sites. Accurate and timely completion of all required forms is essential. The role requires safe operation of machinery, equipment, hand tools, and power tools, working effectively in a team environment, and properly inspecting, utilizing, storing, and maintaining all tools, materials, and equipment. Effective communication, both written and verbal, is necessary, as is the ability to receive and understand written instructions. Tasks can be time-sensitive, and meeting customer expectations may require working various shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, with potential for overtime. To perform this job successfully, an individual should demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills, mechanical aptitude, professionalism, integrity, dependability, and a strong attention to detail. They must also be able to build harmonious relationships with colleagues and supervisors.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED required
18 years of age or older
Valid motor vehicle operator's license with ability to drive a company vehicle
Ability to interpret and understand GCOR, FRA, On-Track Worker Safety Rules, and other applicable rules and regulations.
Strong oral and written communication; ability to speak and write clearly and informatively
Analytical thinking skills to analyze information and use logic to troubleshoot issues.
Mechanically inclined with the ability to problem solve.
Ability to balance team and individual responsibilities.
Ability to maintain professionalism and approach others in a tactful manner.
Ability to react well under pressure in high-stressed situations; displays integrity by holding oneself personally accountable.

Must be able to push, pull, lift and carry up to 25 pounds frequently; up to 50 pounds occasionally; and up to 75 pounds infrequently.
Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force constantly.
Must be able to climb railcar ladder and maneuver about with backpack equipment that weighs up to 25 pounds.
Eye-hand coordination as well as ability to grasp.
Must be able to operate common and specialized hand tools in performing assigned tasks.
Ability to handle and move objects, using hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials.
Must be able to walk about on foot to accomplish tasks; maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or moving about on uneven and/or slippery ground or equipment.
Ability to step on and off equipment safely and work and balance from ladders to perform tasks.
Must be able to climb and work up to 20 feet above the ground.
Must be able to recognize and distinguish colors displayed by signals, signs, etc.
Employees will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as, but may not be limited to, safety glasses, reflective vests, safety boots, hearing protection and gloves where applicable laws and/or the Company requires.

Communicate effectively in writing or verbally via telephone and two-way radios.
Receive instruction in written form from bulletins, orders, or other related materials.
Complete required tasks in a timely manner as tasks can be time sensitive.
