About The Position

STV has an opening for a Rail Vehicle Test Technician in our Oakland, CA office to work out of a third-party manufacturing site in Sacramento, CA as a part of our Vehicles department. The ideal candidate will be interested in working at manufacturing sites as well as client sites to witness and verify Rail Cars and Rail Car Systems routine tests, and also on a case-by-case basis at parts suppliers. The Rail Vehicle Test Technician we are seeking must possess a minimum of 8 years of experience in manufacturing and testing, of Rail vehicles. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting our clients’ requirements throughout the United States with potential future international assignments if needed.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in manufacturing and testing of Rail vehicles.
  • Experienced and knowledgeable in Quality Assurance and Quality Control programs as they relate to the Rail Vehicle industry.
  • Rail Vehicle systems and assembly knowledge.
  • Rail Vehicle subsystems including prime mover, HEP, HVAC, trucks, doors, TCMS, APS, TC, communications, electrical systems, etc.
  • Rail Vehicle testing and witnessing/supporting of such programs.
  • Electrical systems testing including megger, High Potential (Hi Pot) and continuity testing.
  • Understand test data, confirm compliance per test procedures, and highlight discrepancies accordingly.
  • Familiar with technical specifications, safety standards, and contractual requirements.
  • Familiar with safety requirements and practices of the Rail Vehicle industry.
  • Equipment calibration and control processes.
  • Technical School or Community College Education, or equivalent job experience.
  • A minimum of 8 years of inspection and test witnessing experience, preferably in the rail or transit industry.
  • Experience with Rail Vehicle Systems, and testing control programs and activities.
  • Familiarity with industry standards such as APTA, FRA, IEEE, and EN, as applicable.
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools and instrumentation systems (e.g., LabVIEW, MATLAB, or similar).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel periodically and work in field or manufacturing environments as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Witness and verify Rail Cars and Rail Car Systems routine tests.
  • Support client requirements throughout the United States with potential future international assignments.
  • Support of First Article Inspection (FAI) and source inspection requirements.
  • Interface with clients, suppliers, and third-party inspectors during test planning and execution.
  • Prepare weekly status reports for program management and client.
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality assurance, and manufacturing teams to resolve test-related issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of test methodologies, tools, and documentation standards.
