About The Position

Michael Baker's Rail and Transit Practice focuses on developing future rail and transit solutions by addressing key industry issues such as state of good repair, capacity, safety, community livability, asset management and maintenance, planning and development for new projects, and the promotion of environmental stewardship and sustainability. They partner with clients to identify innovative and cost-effective solutions. This specific role is for a Rail Structures Construction Inspector to support rail and transit infrastructure projects in Northeast Missouri, focusing on Class I bridge construction and replacement. The inspector will provide on-site construction engineering and inspection (CEI) services, overseeing daily operations, ensuring compliance with plans, specifications, railroad standards, and regulatory requirements. The role also involves serving as a key field representative and liaison among railroad, local agencies, and the project delivery team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field OR a combination of applicable work experience and education.
  • 5-10 years of related experience on civil construction projects or 4+ years of experience in bridge construction inspection or related field.
  • Proficiency with use of project management technology platforms.
  • Evaluation and maintenance of construction documents – drawings, specifications, materials testing reports and supporting documentation.
  • Excellent English language skills both written and verbal.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Class I Railroads (e.g., CSX, NS, UP, BNSF, CPKC, CN) and/or local transit agencies.
  • Strong knowledge of construction methods, contract administration, and agency requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily construction activities to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with contract requirements.
  • Serve as a point of contact with owners, contractors, inspectors, and project stakeholders.
  • Inspect structural components including foundations, substructures, superstructures, bearings, decks, reinforcing steel, prestressed members, structural steel, and coatings.
  • Perform field measurements, quantity calculations, and pay item documentation.
  • Maintain awareness for project schedules and safety compliance per contract requirements.
  • Conduct and/or coordinate sampling and testing of materials.
  • Identify deficiencies and notify contractor and Project Administrator of non-compliant work.
  • Review shop drawings, material certifications, and test reports.
  • Attend progress meetings and assist in resolving construction issues.
  • Assist in processing contractor pay estimates and maintaining project records.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental permits and erosion control requirements.
  • Identify risks and proactively resolve construction challenges to minimize delays and cost impacts.
  • Support project closeout activities, including punch lists, final inspections, and documentation.

Benefits

  • Compensation range: $30/hr - $40/hr
