About The Position

Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. Our Service Design – Performance Management Office is looking for 1 (1) Rail Operations Planner (Train Modelling and Simulation) to deliver comprehensive, strategic, and technical transportation analysis to develop plans for new services and associated infrastructure requirements and for the optimization of existing services.

Requirements

  • Completion of a diploma/degree in Transportation Planning, Urban Planning, Transportation Engineering, a related field - OR - completion of an apprenticeship program with trade certification –OR – equivalent work experience.
  • Demonstrated years' of progressively related experience in commuter rail operations, traffic simulation, transportation engineering or another appropriate logistical function or a combination of education and experience considered equivalent will be considered.
  • Strong working knowledge in rail planning, rail operations, and/or track and signal infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of the theory, principles, and practices of transportation/transit planning, station planning, and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of applicable industry standards, regulations, and code (CROR, etc.)
  • Strong project management and technical analysis skills including data management, qualitative analysis, and quantitative analysis
  • Knowledge of policy analysis and development process
  • Experience using MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, etc.)

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of OpenTrack, Rail Traffic Controller (RTC), or equivalent rail network simulation software would be an asset.
  • Programming experience (Python, R, JavaScript, VBA etc,) would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for modelling and simulating rail network utilization scenarios using industry and best practice standards.
  • Conduct rail network analyses, studies, computer simulation model development or modification, and technical report generation to address a wide range of operating, infrastructure and performance issues.
  • Perform operational analysis using historical data, scenario models, and rail network design.
  • Validate system requirements through operational analysis and rail network planning.
  • Conduct analysis of results and identify trends in rail scheduling issues and recommend efficiencies to methodologies and processes for network expansion, service delivery and cost improvements as related to service expansion and construction activities.
  • Collaborates on assessing impacts on ridership, schedules, equipment, and other corporate resource requirements.
  • Review and update relevant manuals.
  • Provide railway operations resources and interacting with internal and external stakeholders.
