About The Position

Universal Rail Solutions is seeking experienced Railroad Machine Operators to support railway maintenance and construction projects across Western Canada. This full-time, seasonal, unionized role requires safety-focused individuals skilled in railway equipment operation and comfortable working in remote environments. The position involves travel throughout Western Canada, with rotations ranging from 5 to 21 days depending on operational needs, delivering critical rail infrastructure safely and efficiently.

Requirements

  • Proven experience operating railway machines on track (not rubber‑tired equipment)
  • Demonstrated proficiency in machine operation and basic maintenance
  • Strong safety awareness and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with field teams
  • Willingness to support general labour tasks when required
  • Professionalism, reliability, and adaptability in dynamic work environments
  • Minimum one full season of experience operating specified railway equipment on rail
  • Appropriate licensing or certification to meet machine operating requirements
  • Ability and willingness to travel to remote work locations
  • Availability to work all shifts, including nights, weekends, and statutory holidays
  • Valid Class 5 (non‑GDL) or Class G driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check, drug & alcohol testing, and fitness‑for‑duty assessment (including lifting up to 50 lbs)
  • Willingness to obtain and maintain required eRail / eRailSafe certification
  • Willingness to purchase and wear 8‑inch metatarsal safety boots (boot allowance provided after minimum hours met)

Responsibilities

  • Operate assigned railway maintenance and construction equipment on rail
  • Perform daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance
  • Execute machine operations in accordance with project plans, rules, and safety procedures
  • Maintain clear communication with Foremen and crew members during operations
  • Support track maintenance and construction work as required
  • Perform general labour duties when not operating equipment
  • Comply with all company policies, union agreements, and rail safety regulations
  • Maintain a strong safety awareness in all working conditions
  • Work outdoors in remote locations and varying weather conditions
