Position Summary: The Rail Freight Specialist is responsible for supporting management of Marathon’s book of rail business, ensuring optimal freight contract performance, and identifying strategic opportunities to reduce costs and improve service. This role requires deep knowledge of rail tariffs, contract negotiation, and freight logistics, with a focus on optimal routing and operational efficiency. The position could be based in either San Antonio, TX and or Findlay, OH.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required
  • Three (3) years of rail industry experience required

  • Bachelor's degree in business, logistics, supply chain, or a closely related field preferred

Responsibilities

  • Process and respond to daily rail freight rate requests, ensuring accurate and timely pricing for rail freight movements as well as balancing cost efficiency, service levels, and network capacity.
  • Track and manage negotiated empty and loaded freight contracts, ensuring compliance and timely renewals.
  • Analyze freight rate structures and maintain fuel surcharges, to identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Benchmark rates against industry standards and market conditions.
  • Stay current with Class I railroad tariff changes and assess their impact on Marathon’s freight costs and service levels.
  • Maintain and update Marathon’s book of rail business, including lane utilization, carrier performance, and cost metrics.
  • Lead negotiations for new and renewal freight contracts, collaborating with supply chain, commercial and legal teams as needed.
  • Work closely with schedulers, fleet managers, and asset reliability teams to align freight strategy with operational needs. Identify opportunities for improvement to reduce rail freight and accessorial spend.
  • Provide regular reporting on freight spending, contract status, and performance metrics to leadership.
  • Support invoice reconciliation automation or digital transformation initiatives.
  • Support ad hoc projects and initiatives as assigned by the Rail Operations Director and Rail Services Manager.
