About The Position

Michael Baker International is seeking a Rail Construction Department Manager to lead our Rail Construction Services Group. This role is responsible for the day-to-day management and operation of our dedicated Rail Construction team and projects across multiple offices nationwide. The manager will coordinate with other Construction Department Managers to hire and staff Rail Construction projects. Key responsibilities include project delivery oversight, ensuring adherence to scope, schedule, budget, and quality control/quality assurance, staff utilization, and team safety. The ideal candidate is a railway-focused leader who will collaborate with CM’s/CI's, Resident Engineers, and Inspectors to provide high-quality construction services nationwide. This role will also focus on developing and growing the team, as well as developing and maintaining positive client relations. Additionally, the manager will support the Director, Rail & Transit Construction Services in expanding the project portfolio and client base, and may support Rail Directors with construction services as directed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management or a related field required
  • 15+ years’ experience in related construction oversight/management required
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license
  • Proven experience working for freight rail clients
  • Demonstrated proficiency in project safety, scheduling (CPM scheduling, Primavera, Microsoft Project), staffing, cost estimating, risk management, quality management, and project/document controls
  • Proactive critical thinker/problem solver
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Collaboration minded individual working within team environment
  • Dedication to project goals, client satisfaction, corporate aspirations, business development, growth objectives, staff development, and operational excellence

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Construction Manager (CCM) a plus
  • Familiarity with track construction and rail bridge construction, preferred
  • Familiarity with working in active rail facilities, preferred
  • Track safety certification, preferred

Responsibilities

  • Management and coordination of dedicated rail construction personnel
  • Setting goals, metrics, and budgets at the department level
  • Executing personnel management duties including hiring, training, timekeeping approval, and performance assessment
  • Participating in the development of proposals, scope, and fees
  • Business Development: Assisting in developing and maintaining client relations and management, monitoring client satisfaction (internal and external), and engaging on key Department pursuits
  • Project Management/Construction Management Duties: Overseeing project requirements to ensure quality standards and deadlines are met, reviewing status reports and modifying schedules/plans, directing and coordinating project personnel, conferring with personnel for technical advice and problem resolution, generating/approving purchase orders, invoices, credits, and reviewing timesheets, attending job/CM/Design coordination meetings and technical meetings, and coordinating/leading project progress meetings
  • Quality Management and Training: Leading department compliance with quality management and quality assurance practices, maintaining current knowledge of applicable regulations and industry practices, and maintaining ultimate responsibility for project quality, cost, schedule, and safety
  • Developing, maintaining, and distributing project-specific Project Management Plans, including Health & Safety Plans and Quality Management Plans
  • Assisting the Director in conducting safety meetings and training programs
  • Coordinating audits of quality management processes and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned
