About The Position

The Rail Cleaner performs cleaning, servicing, yard support, equipment movement assistance, and general labor functions necessary to maintain CapMetro DMU fleet and mechanical facilities in a safe and operationally ready condition. Work is performed in accordance with FRA regulations, CapMetro safety rules (including Blue Flag Protection and Roadway Worker Protection), and the CapMetro Mechanical Training, Qualification, and Designation Program. This position supports fleet readiness through interior and exterior cleaning, waste-system servicing, shop and yard housekeeping, and assistance with DMU movements within yard limits. Upon successful completion of required training and formal designation, incumbents may perform or assist with calendar day inspections and other qualified tasks as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Two (2) years of experience in manual labor, industrial cleaning, or equipment servicing preferred.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required training and designations under CapMetro Mechanical Training, Qualification, and Designation Program, including at minimum: CapMetro Blue Flag Protection, Roadway Worker Protection / On-Track Safety (49 CFR 214), North Operations Physical Characteristics, New Hire Safety Training and applicable emergency systems familiarization, Forklift operation (as applicable).
  • Valid driver’s license required for positions involving operation of company vehicles or motorized equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe cleaning practices, chemical handling (HAZCOM), and use of commercial cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and established procedures.
  • Ability to work safely around moving equipment, uneven surfaces, and in varying weather conditions.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude preferred for support of equipment movement and simple assist tasks.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to learn and progress through CapMetro qualification and designation pathways.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Competency with operating forklifts, tractors, or similar equipment.

  • Prior experience in railroad, transit, or industrial cleaning/servicing environments
  • Upon successful completion of CapMetro formal Training, Qualification, and Designation Program (including knowledge demonstration and practical evaluation), may be designated as a qualified person to perform or assist with exterior and/or interior calendar day mechanical inspections under 49 CFR 238.303 / 238.305 and 229.21(c). CapMetro retains sole discretion over designation based on demonstrated competency and operational need.

Responsibilities

  • Perform interior and exterior cleaning of DMU passenger equipment, including vacuuming, mopping, dusting, window cleaning, and washing of car bodies and components in accordance with CapMetro standards and applicable health/safety guidelines.
  • Service and empty waste retention systems, trash receptacles, and properly handle and dispose of waste materials.
  • Sand, Fuel, Service DMUs as required.
  • Assist with or perform authorized movements of DMUs within yard limits when qualified as MFOE/MFOC or under the direction of qualified personnel.
  • Operate forklifts, light mobile equipment, and similar equipment when trained and authorized.
  • Assist Technicians with basic mechanical support tasks, material handling, and staging of equipment or parts as directed.
  • Apply and maintain CapMetro Blue Flag Protection and comply with all Roadway Worker Protection (49 CFR 214) requirements when working on or near track and equipment.
  • Participate in required safety training, emergency preparedness drills, and equipment familiarization.
  • Maintain proper care and use of cleaning equipment, tools, materials, and personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain shop, yard, and facility cleanliness; perform general housekeeping and support functions.
  • Accurately complete required records and reports related to cleaning, servicing, and any designated inspection or movement activities.
  • Support Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Safety Management Systems (SMS) process by ensuring staff follows safety and security policies, considers safety in every action, and ensures safety and security concerns are reported.
  • Perform other rail-related duties as assigned.
