About The Position

The Radiology Equipment Specialist tests, repairs, calibrates and assists in installation of radiological and related equipment used in medical diagnosis or therapy. Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions include performing equipment maintenance and calibration at regular or required intervals to maintain manufacturers' operational specifications. This role involves inspecting and testing malfunctioning equipment to determine the cause of malfunction, disassembling malfunctioning equipment and removing, replacing, or repairing defective components, and readjusting components to manufacturers' specifications. The specialist will confer with supervisors, manufacturers' representatives, equipment operators, and other workers to discuss and establish work priorities, resolve equipment related problems, and plan installation, preventive maintenance, and repair procedures. Additionally, the role includes removing old equipment, preparing space for installation of new equipment, and overseeing installation by the manufacturer/vendor. Maintaining records of maintenance and repair work, ordering parts and supplies, and attending training sessions to stay updated on technological advances are also key functions. The specialist will conduct in-service or coordinate training sessions for radiology clinical/professional staff on proper use and safety of advanced radiology equipment. A working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and industry standards is required. The role may involve duties as a Biomedical Equipment Technician or other assigned duties. On-call service coverage after normal business hours on a rotating basis is expected. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid driver’s license is necessary for travel to off-site locations for equipment maintenance and service. The ability to perform professional, clinical, and/or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department is essential.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree Applied Sciences Degree in related field of Medical Electronics, Electronic Technology, Imaging Service Technology, or equivalent related Biomedical Engineering or military training and experience.
  • 2 or more years experience in the above mentioned fields if an active AAMI Radiology Equipment Specialist Certification is held by the technician; or Five (5) or more years of experience performing corrective and planned maintenance in the areas of Biomedical Engineering and/or Radiology if the technician does not hold an active AAMI Radiology Equipment certification.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, medical instrumentation, anatomy, physiology, 21 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations).
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of OSHA, NFPA, The Joint Commission, EOC, FDA and other specific regulations and standards pertaining to clinical and radiology equipment service and repair.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex information related to malfunctioning imaging equipment as described by clinical staff, and then determine equipment operational condition; able to follow complex written instructions, perform tasks and document actions taken to restore service.
  • Strong communication and inter-personal skills to interact positively with all levels of hospital personnel and vendors to achieve positive outcomes, including, but not limited to: physicists, physicians, administration, etc.

Nice To Haves

  • Related experience operating complex testing equipment, including, but not limited to: High Voltage Bleeder or Dynalyzer, Densitometer, Non-Invasive kVp Meter, Oscilloscopes, etc.
  • Specialized training by manufacturer or third party equipment repair in areas such as: diagnostic x-ray, nuclear medicine, therapeutic x-ray, ultrasound, or radiation therapy equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs equipment maintenance and calibration of equipment at regular or required intervals to maintain manufacturers' operational specifications.
  • Inspects and tests malfunctioning equipment to determine cause of malfunction, following learned procedures and repair manual instructions, using specialized test and analysis instruments and manufacturers' specifications.
  • Disassembles malfunctioning equipment and removes, replaces, or repairs defective components, and readjusts components to manufacturers' specifications.
  • Confers with supervisors, manufacturers' representatives, equipment operators, and other workers to discuss and establish work priorities, resolve equipment related problems, and plan installation, preventive maintenance, and repair procedures.
  • Removes old equipment, prepares space for installation of new equipment, and oversees installation of new equipment by manufacturer/vendor.
  • Maintains records of maintenance and repair work and approved updates of equipment as required.
  • Orders parts and supplies, within established departmental guidelines, that are required for the emergency service and repair of all radiological and general medical equipment.
  • Attends training session on equipment maintenance in order to keep up-to-date on technological and medical equipment advances.
  • Conducts in-service or coordinates training sessions to radiology clinical/professional staff on proper use and safety of advanced radiology equipment.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations and industry standards.
  • May be assigned duties as Biomedical Equipment Technician or other duties as assigned or required.
  • Provides on-call service coverage after normal business hours on a rotating basis, as assigned.
  • Have in possession or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license in order to drive to locations other than the UKHS main Hospital campus to perform maintenance and/or service on equipment as needed.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.
