About The Position

At Idaho National Laboratory, you'll perform regulatory impact reviews and technical evaluations of Radiation Protection program implementation, conduct internal and external dosimetry exposure investigations, develop corrective actions for program deficiencies, and provide technical guidance for radiological control policies and procedures. You'll design and select radiation detection instrumentation, develop training programs for health physicists and radiological technicians, author technical reports and briefings for senior leadership, and generate proposals and business development ideas that expand Idaho National Laboratory's radiological health physics capabilities.

Requirements

  • Level 2: Bachelor of Science degree in health physics, nuclear engineering, or related science degree and 2 years of relevant experience; or an advanced degree in health physics, nuclear engineering, or related science degree.
  • Level 3: Bachelor of Science degree in health physics, nuclear engineering, or related science degree and 5 years of relevant experience; or an advanced degree in health physics, nuclear engineering, or related science degree and 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in related health physics field such as academic, research environment, DOE, NRC, etc.
  • Experience and proficiency with a variety of health physics software programs.
  • Attainment of one of the flowing requirements; NRRPT certification, ABHP Exam Part 1, or an Advanced degree in health physics is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Degree in health physics, nuclear engineering, science, or related science degree, and either NRRPT certification, or advanced degree in health physics, or ABHP Exam Part 1.
  • Certified Health Physics (CHP) through American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) desired.
  • Obtain and maintain emergency response organization (ERO) qualifications as required for facilities supported.
  • Sufficient knowledge of NRC and equivalent Agreement State rules and regulations on reporting requirements for material licensees to review and code event records from event reports including ENs, PNs, inspection reports, licensee reports, and Agreement State reports;
  • Knowledge and familiarity with the application of the NRC abnormal occurrences criteria;
  • Sufficient knowledge of the applications of various medical modalities (e.g., brachytherapy and thyroid ablation therapy) and medical device functionality (e.g., dose calibrators);
  • Thorough knowledge of health physics and radiation safety practices associated with: 1) the use of material covered under the AEA (e.g., byproduct, naturally occurring and accelerator-produced [NARM], source, and special nuclear material in medical applications, research, industrial radiography, well logging, industrial measuring, and irradiators); and 2) the transportation and disposal of such material;
  • High level of knowledge of the operation of computer database systems and the NMED database data entry application.

Responsibilities

  • Perform oversight and technical input, regulatory impact reviews, technical evaluations, and other critical support activities regarding Radiation Protection program implementation in accordance with the requirements of 10 CFR 835, applicable DOE Orders, and the INL Radiological Control Manual and associated INL Radiological Control procedures.
  • Interpret test results and perform internal and external dosimetry exposure investigations.
  • Identify deficiencies, develop appropriate corrective actions, provide technical guidance for development of radiological control policies and procedures, review new regulatory requirements for applicability, and review research and operations projects and programs for compliance with radiological control requirements.
  • Provide analysis and support ranging from designing and selecting radiation-detection instrumentation to establishing the technical basis for laboratory radiation protection standards.
  • Evaluate and provide selected options for program implementation within the framework of DOE and INL requirements.
  • Develop and assist as necessary with training programs for future health physicists, radiological professionals, and radiological technicians.
  • Generate ideas for new proposals and business development opportunities.
  • Prepare materials for scientific and technical products, reports, documents, presentations, and concept papers.
  • Author technical reports to include formal briefings to senior leadership and/or program sponsors.
  • May participate in National or International standards setting institutions.
  • May be responsible for the DOELAP accredited program and associated documentation. Related duties include reviewing, approving, uploading external dosimetry data, and performing vendor audits.
  • Provide oversight and review of external dosimetry practices and procedures to ensure correct implementation of proper practices across the Site.
  • May assist in Nuclear Accident Dosimetry processing and refurbishment as well as the OSL extremity estimator program.
  • Provide radiological oversight for day-to-day activities at assigned facility regarding Radiation Protection implementation in accordance with the requirements of 10 CFR 835, applicable DOE Orders, and the INL Radiological Control Manual and associated INL Radiological Control procedures.
  • Responsible for assisting with the implementation and continuing improvement of the INL radiological control program. This includes identifying program deficiencies, developing appropriate corrective actions, providing technical guidance for development of radiological control policies and procedures, reviewing new regulatory requirements for applicability, and reviewing research and operations projects and programs for compliance with radiological control requirements.
  • Review and evaluate proposed radiological work activities.
  • Assist with Technical Work Documents development, ALARA reviews, Radiation Work Permits, Waste Characterizations, Internal Dose Monitoring, and Air Sampling performance.
  • Ensure that radiological controls are comprehensive and documented in accordance with radiological procedures
