About The Position

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is seeking a Health Physicist to join the Environment, Safety and Health (ESH) Directorate. This role will provide health physics (HP) support to LLNL programs, ensuring the effective implementation of the Radiation Protection Program. Responsibilities include field engagement, hazard evaluation, control verification, and technical documentation support. The position can be filled at either the TSS.3 or TSS.4 level, depending on the candidate's experience. This position may offer a hybrid schedule, allowing for remote work after a probationary period, with specifics determined by team and organizational needs.

Requirements

Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance (U.S. citizenship required).
Bachelor’s degree in Health Physics or a related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Significant experience leading independent HP work, conducting hazard analysis, evaluating new health and safety standards, and providing technical direction/leadership to health and safety staff on HP related matters.
Experience providing emergency response and participation in the investigation of incidents or accidents involving radiological hazards.
Advanced experience in HP or a related field with thorough knowledge of related state and federal regulations and other consensus standards.
Ability to work independently with minimal direction and collaborate across organizations while managing priorities and meeting schedules.
Analytical and computational skills, including databases and common productivity tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Ability to evaluate complex problems and implement practical, compliant solutions.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks and interruptions.
Advanced written and verbal communication skills to convey technical information to internal and external audiences, including regulators and stakeholders.
Subject matter expertise in one or more areas such as Health Physics, Radiological Engineering, or Nuclear Engineering, with ability to develop and apply advanced methods to deliver solutions for complex program needs (additional requirement at TSS.4 level).
Ability to advise senior management and represent technical positions with external sponsors, regulators, and reviewers (additional requirement at TSS.4 level).
Substantial experience handling highly complex problems, creating problem statements, assumptions, and decision frameworks (additional requirement at TSS.4 level).

Nice To Haves

Master’s degree or PhD in Health Physics, or another related technical area.
Certification by the American Board of Health Physics.
Knowledge and experience with Department of Energy (DOE) operations and transuranic isotopes.

Responsibilities

Provide complex HP support to assigned programs, including evaluating personnel dosimetry, bioassay, and in-vivo monitoring; identifying monitoring needs; and coordinating recommendations with program owners.
Partner with program personnel to understand radiological work, assess hazards, and verify the appropriateness, documentation, communication, and effectiveness of controls through field visits and inspections.
Review, develop, and update radiological safety and work planning documentation, such as Facility Safety Plans, Work Control Documents, Radiological Work Permits, Safety Analysis Reports, Engineering Designs, and ES&H submittals.
Develop and deliver HP briefings and training, mentor less experienced staff, and provide feedback on HP program performance and improvement opportunities.
Respond to radiological incidents and emergencies, support investigations and corrective actions, and provide HP support during assessments, inspections, and verifications.
Provide day-to-day technical oversight to health and safety technicians performing HP sampling and assigned tasks.
Support the development and execution of the HP Discipline Action Plan for assigned areas.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Lead technical or operational tasks and projects and/or support research efforts (additional responsibility at TSS.4 level).
Conduct highly advanced studies using technical, applied science, and business principles (additional responsibility at TSS.4 level).
Provide solutions to highly complex issues with ambiguity, requiring in-depth analysis and potentially complex computational analyses (additional responsibility at TSS.4 level).
Serve as the organization spokesperson on specialized projects or programs and act as the prime consultant on large projects (additional responsibility at TSS.4 level).
Brief senior management on the overall impact and approach of projects or programs (additional responsibility at TSS.4 level).
