About The Position

The diagnostic Radiologic Technologist successfully acquires quality radiographs and performs fluoroscopy guidance for diagnostic, surgical, and therapeutic purposes, using the expertise and knowledge of radiologic technology and radiographic equipment and positioning. This role involves technical requirements such as problem-solving, troubleshooting, and independent work in various areas of the diagnostic radiology department, including the operating room with portable X-ray and c-arm equipment. The technologist may also perform medical assistant duties, participate in OR procedures, and operate all radiographic rooms and equipment. Responsibilities include tracking, scanning, verifying studies, completing paperwork, monitoring PACS, documenting exam details, prepping patients, taking histories, explaining procedures, ensuring correct patient positioning, preparing contrast agents, and utilizing shielding. Departmental and institutional requirements include staying updated on policies and protocols, willingness to rotate assignments and shifts, flexibility for weekends and shift changes, abiding by mandates, rotating through campuses, adhering to Ellis Medicine Behaviors and Standards, and not sleeping on the clock. Technologists must clean and stock the department during downtime. Per Diem employees must follow specific policies regarding holidays and monthly hours in designated departments. All technologists are expected to be role models, mentoring and teaching students.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an approved Radiologic Technology education program.
  • ARRT required.
  • New York State license in Radiologic Technology is required.
  • New graduates will receive a temporary permit that is valid for 6 months or until they successfully pass the ARRT Radiology boards.
  • If a new graduate fails to pass the ARRT Radiology board, they will have 10 days to work, at which time their temporary permit will be rescinded.
  • Will not be able to work as a Radiologic Technologist until successful completion of passing the ARRT Radiology boards.

Responsibilities

  • Acquire quality radiographs and perform fluoroscopy guidance for diagnostic, surgical, and therapeutic purposes.
  • Problem-solve and troubleshoot issues independently or through proper channels.
  • Work independently in all areas of the diagnostic radiology department, including the operating room, with portable X-ray equipment, and with c-arm equipment.
  • Perform medical assistant duties as necessary.
  • Participate in all OR procedures and capable of doing them independently.
  • Operate all radiographic rooms and all equipment including the fluoroscopy, portables, c-arms and diagnostic radiographic equipment.
  • Track, scan, verify studies and complete all required paperwork associated with such.
  • Monitor PACS for Problem Studies and Call Reports as a measure of default when a dedicated person is unable.
  • Document on requisition appropriate needed information such as time of exam, how many images, clinical info, room of exam and initials of staff participating in the exam.
  • Prep the patient for a diagnostic imaging exam.
  • Read doctor's notes as to why the exam is being performed.
  • Take histories.
  • Explain the procedure to the patient.
  • Correct Positioning of patients.
  • Prepare solutions for patients to drink (Barium, contrast agents).
  • Utilize shielding as necessary for patient and staff.
  • Keep up to date on department and hospital policies, department protocols, radiographic study protocols, and hospital work rules.
  • Rotate out of scheduled room assignments and possibly shift assignments for the greater good of the department.
  • Participate in shift rotation and have flexibility to work weekends when scheduled or needed or change of shift when needed.
  • Abide by the mandate list.
  • Rotate through other campuses as required or needed.
  • Abide by the Ellis Medicine Behaviors and Standards.
  • Abide by all departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Do not sleep while on the clock or during the shift.
  • Clean and stock the department during downtime.
  • Follow per diem policies of the required holiday per year in the cost center and must maintain 16 hours /month in each department intended to work in (for Per Diem).
  • Be a role model for the department of radiology, mentoring and teaching radiologic technology students from affiliated x-ray programs.
