About The Position

This is a dual role that requires flexibility and knowledge of both Radiology and Medical Assisting. The position operates general, fluoroscopic, and portable radiographic equipment to perform a variety of radiology examinations/procedures on pediatric inpatients/outpatients. The employee will apply prescribed ionizing radiation for diagnostic imaging under physician supervision. In addition to radiology responsibilities, the employee will perform Medical Assistant duties including administrative, clinical, departmental support, and documentation. The expectation for this role is 20% radiology and 80% medical assisting, with potential for growth in the radiology portion.

Requirements

  • Graduate of Radiologic Technologist program accredited by American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) required.
  • Registered as a Radiologic Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology; ARRT (R) in good standing.
  • New graduates will be given up to 90 days to become ARRT(R) with documentation of program completion.
  • Current State of Connecticut Radiographer License.
  • New graduates will be given 90 days to obtain Connecticut Radiographer License according to Connecticut Statutes 20-74bb(f).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire and maintained thereafter.
  • Positive attitude with excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Basic knowledge of Medical Terminology and basic math and measurements.
  • Exemplary customer service skills.
  • Basic literacy and proficiency in computers, Microsoft Office applications, Practice Management System(s), and Electronic Health Record Systems (E.H.R.).
  • Excellent interpersonal, phone, customer service, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication in English, demonstrating a command of basic grammar and spelling.
  • Ability to care for patients treated at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center regardless of age, disability, gender, and ethnicity.
  • Understand and follow specific written and verbal instructions and procedures.
  • Learn and demonstrate competency in standard clinical procedures within specialty area, according to established protocols.
  • Maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
  • Learn and follow established protocols in order to initiate appropriate action in emergency/crisis situations.
  • Learn and demonstrate competency in basic data entry/data retrieval in paper/electronic patient records.
  • Effectively work in a team environment as well as collaboratively with all disciplines.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of medical assistant training program accredited by an accrediting body approved by the American Association for Medical Assistants or American Medical Technologists (or completion of equivalent course of study provided by the military) preferred; if formal training program was not completed, then certification as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) granted by the American Medical Technologists is preferred.
  • Completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant training program is preferred.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
  • Ability to travel to satellite locations may be required.
  • Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients/families.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of safety needs and a basic knowledge of medical terminology, infection control, risk management, and environment of care policies.
  • Those Medical Assistants hired as a “float” or exclusively for the satellites must demonstrate flexibility and knowledge of documentation/procedures/workflow in the various departments to maximally support the patient experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assess imaging orders for completeness, accuracy, and appropriateness.
  • Involve patient/parent/and caregiver in care and exam/procedure.
  • Demonstrate age-related competency and cultural sensitivity.
  • Introduce self and role, and explain procedures thoroughly.
  • Perform radiologic exams/procedures.
  • Allow time for and encourage questions.
  • Provide support and effective communications to other members of the department and healthcare team.
  • Work efficiently as a team member.
  • Consult with physicians, RNs, and other technologists to provide quality imaging services.
  • Adhere to a culture of safety.
  • Wash hands and sanitize equipment as directed.
  • Assure timeliness and accuracy when performing requested exams.
  • Perform radiologic exams per protocol.
  • Notify appropriate ordering provider of recommended changes to ordered exam.
  • Provide support to other modalities within the department as required.
  • Perform diagnostic exams for all areas supported by the department of Radiology including the ED, OR, onsite and off-site radiology locations.
  • Ensure all images are of excellent diagnostic quality, including appropriate patient demographics, positioning, technique, and laterality markers.
  • Appropriately shield patients and image to minimize radiation dose in accordance with ALARA principles.
  • Educate and mentor radiologic skills of new technologists and students.
  • Evaluate clinical and technical proficiency.
  • Successfully utilize information technology systems associated with the role.
  • Assure that images and documentation are complete and accurate in the patient medical record.
  • Adhere to all hospital and department policies, procedures, guidelines, and protocols.
  • Coordinate equipment service as required.
  • May be called upon to cover nights, evenings, weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
  • Rotate shifts and be scheduled on-call responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate support for the mission, values, and goals of the organization through consistent behaviors.
  • Demonstrate exemplary customer service.
  • Practice within the scope of the state of CT Radiologic license and ARRT (R) certification.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Support the patient check-in and check-out processes.
  • Schedule and coordinate all patient appointments.
  • Answer and direct calls.
  • Process pre-authorizations and pre-certifications.
  • Prepare and file medical records.
  • Provide cross coverage for other administrative roles.
  • Maintain clinical files according to organization/department protocol.
  • Process patient-related correspondence.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
  • Ensure efficient patient flow.
  • Prepare treatment rooms and equipment for patient examinations.
  • Provide appropriate procedural support following department-specific guidelines.
  • Perform initial intake of patient, including interviewing patient and family for chief complaint, vital signs, and allergy information.
  • Accurately record and/or update relevant patient information.
  • Perform daily Quality Controls (QC) for all Point of Care (POC) testing.
  • Obtain specimens, accurately perform and record patient POC testing per policy.
  • Under provider and/or RN direction, track and retrieve patient lab/diagnostic testing results.
  • Under provider and/or RN direction, perform administrative functions of patient prescription renewal process.
  • Provide cross coverage for other appropriate clinical roles.
  • Provide support as needed for departmental medical record audits.
  • Clean and stock patient care rooms between patients.
  • Maintain appropriate inventories of all medical supplies.
  • Stock and maintain all patient-related forms and educational materials.
  • Utilize equipment appropriately and notify Practice Manager of equipment/facility breakdown or damage.
  • Ensure documentation is legible and falls within appropriate MA scope/Organizational documentation guidelines.
  • Accurately document patient information on appropriate forms.
  • Demonstrate accuracy in basic data entry and data retrieval of paper/electronic patient records.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned to promote the health, safety, and comfort of CT Children's patients and families.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of age-related differences and needs of patients from neonate through adolescence.
  • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity in all interactions.
