Our current hybrid approach requires staff to work onsite a minimum of two days each week, every Tuesday and Wednesday, Hybrid staff are also welcome to come in additional days each week or may be asked to come in on other days by their manager. GBH News is Boston’s only fully integrated local public media entity with Television, Radio, and Digital all working in one newsroom. Our daily goal is to go beyond the headlines, examine the deeper topics and themes, and add context and perspective to the news. WGBH 89.7 FM broadcasts local, national, and international news and talk shows all day from 5AM to 8PM. GBH News team covers and produces local and national news including in-depth feature stories and interviews, covering a wide range of topics. Boston Public Radio, hosted by Jim Braude and Margery Eagan, is GBH’s midday talk show, featuring smart local conversation with leaders and thinkers shaping greater Boston: on-air, online, and in-person. GBH’s newest show, The Curiosity Desk, is hosted daily by Edgar B. Herwick III, and features conversations, insights and profundities about the world around us. Together, the two shows encompass 89.7 GBH’s 11 AM to 2:00 PM midday block. The Radio Associate Producer for BPR and TCD is a key position on our flagship talk show and reports to the Executive Producer, working closely with hosts Jim Braude and Margery Eagan, as well as Edgar B. Herwick III and the producers on both shows. The position requires demonstrated leadership skills, excellent written and audio production and editing skills, the ability to research topics and potential guests, the ability to work closely with a small team and within a larger newsroom and foundation, cooperatively and calmly under deadline pressure. The Radio Associate Producer will support the work of producing two live radio and video productions GBH’s main studio in Brighton and our Boston Public Library satellite studio, preparing the hosts, booking guests, and writing web content for GBHNews.org. In addition, the Radio Associate Producer will help the shows expand their social media and digital offerings, including via video and podcast platforms. The Radio Associate Producer will also write cut-scripts and wraps for radio news broadcasts, as well as stories for GBHNews.org, after daily production is complete. The Radio Associate Producer should understand the unique BPR and Curiosity Desk takes on NPR’s style and demonstrate comfort with using audio, video and text-editing software. They must feel comfortable calling potential guests and sources to schedule interviews. They must be intellectually curious and a close watcher of the news, both locally and nationally. This position requires superb writing and digital editing skills – written, audio, and video. The shift will be 8:00 AM– 4:00 PM Monday – Friday, and occasionally some hours on Sunday. Hours may differ in the event of breaking news.

Requirements

  • Must be a voracious consumer of news, a self-starter who is able to work collaboratively with a fast-paced, nimble staff.
  • Excellent verbal communication and organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines; ability to be flexible as news breaks or show rundowns change.
  • Must be able to perform in-depth research on a variety of topics, national and local, and needs to be familiar with the local issues facing greater Boston.
  • Positive attitude, ability to work with hosts and other producers in a team environment.
  • Excellent computer skills, including recording devices and technology, specifically audio and video editing/recording software.
  • Ability to think about big-picture approaches to covering issues and ideas, while also executing the many small details and tasks involved in producing two daily shows.
  • Familiarity with a range of social media platforms and content management systems.
  • Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent time frames and changing priorities.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • At least 2-3 years of experience in journalism and/or audio/video production required.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, research, and write copy and research from all available sources. This will include intro and outro scripts for the live show and setting up interviews for future shows.
  • Research story topics and prepare the hosts for feature interviews as needed.
  • Help lead the editorial direction of the shows, along with other producers and hosts, to think longer-term about segments day-of and into the future.
  • React to breaking news; keep the hosts informed, book guests, and help to coordinate listener feedback via phones, text, and social media channels.
  • Write stories and update content for GBHNews.org and the BPR/CD webpages, and other GBH digital platforms.
  • Lead our social media and podcast production processes – including video on YouTube and Tik Tok accounts.
  • Coordinate and liaise with other production units within GBH, as well as other groups around the Foundation who support our work, including Marketing and Communications.
  • Work on special projects as assigned. This may include in the field broadcasts, and additional reporting duties.
