About The Position

The WEMU-FM Morning Host/News Director is the local host of NPR’s Morning Edition and is responsible for the writing and production of local and regional news and public affairs programming, and hosting of the station's morning four-hour morning news magazine program. The news director/host also assesses news content suitability for air on WEMU-FM, reflecting both the station's responsibility for service to the community and its affiliation with and responsibility to its licensee, Eastern Michigan University.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of broadcasting and radio station operations, typically acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Liberal Arts or a related field is required.
  • Four years' on-the-air news experience is required.
  • Team management experience is required.
  • Working knowledge of digital content creation and management is required.
  • Experience with broadcast software (WEMU uses ENCO and NewsBoss) is required.
  • Prior broadcast experience and knowledge of public broadcasting is a must.

Responsibilities

  • Host daily morning news program.
  • Work with station leadership on news coverage and direction, and calendar of feature stories, content partnerships, digital content, and live interviews.
  • Assign stories and coverage for news reporters, monitor their work, edit stories, and provide feedback on news assignments.
  • Develop and implement action plans for breaking news coverage.
  • Contact and arrange for studio guests as necessary (or call-in guests when necessary).
  • Maintain station operation in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Maintain required records of materials used in assigned programs, and maintain log of broadcast operations.
  • Maintain public file as required by the FCC.
  • Update news on WEMU webpage and social media channel(s).
  • Develop podcasts and digital content, in collaboration with other team members, as requested and assigned by station leadership.
  • Represent the station at various organizations and outside agency functions and station fundraising events. Includes moderating panels, hosting debates, speaking to community groups, and emceeing events as requested/assigned.
  • Perform related Departmental duties, as required.
