Radiation Therapist, Per Diem
About The Position
The Radiation Therapist must ensure quality patient care and maintain the highest level of patient and personnel safety. The Technologist should inform the patient that s/he will be responsible for administering ionizing radiation therapy according to prescription and instruction of the radiation oncologist. This role involves checking informed consent, patient identification, and treatment calculations. Accurate positioning, patient comfort, and maintaining visual and verbal contact with the patient are crucial. The therapist delivers prescribed radiation therapy with minimal supervision, prepares the treatment room, and maintains skin markings. They observe patients for unusual reactions, monitor radiation safety, and assist with quality assurance checks on equipment. Additional responsibilities include assisting in tumor localization, preparation of immobilization devices, dosimetry procedures, and potentially assisting physics in block making and calibration. Knowledge of multi-leaf collimator use, maintaining an orderly work area, and accurate record-keeping are also key. The role involves performing patient quality assurance, keeping treatment rooms supplied, presenting professionally, assisting in new employee orientation, and providing technical guidance to others.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited Radiation Therapy Program
- Trained in equipment maintenance
- General understanding of Physics, Anatomy and Physiology
- Excellent communication skills
- Registry eligible for ARRT.
- Must obtain ARRT certification within 12 months of hire.
- Must be at a minimum Temporarily Licensed by the State of Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MA DPH) and obtain a permanent License within 12 months of hire

- Six months Radiation Oncology Therapy experience or equivalent clinical experience obtained through completion of a Radiation Therapy Program
- Knowledgeable in the tattoo techniques.
- Knowledgeable in use of multi-leaf collimator.
Responsibilities
- Administering ionizing radiation therapy according to prescription and instruction of the radiation oncologist.
- Checking that informed consent has been completed.
- Checking patient identification verbally as well as picture form.
- Checking calculations prior to treatment including IMPAC.
- Ensuring accurate positioning and patient comfort.
- Maintaining visual and verbal contact with the patient.
- Delivering treatment in accordance with center’s protocols.
- Accurately delivering the prescribed course of radiation therapy with minimal supervision after checking patient chart for daily dose, prescription, diagnosis and consent.
- Preparing treatment room for each patient as prescribed; transfer patient safely to treatment couch.
- Maintaining skin marking as necessary.
- Observing patient for unusual reactions and events and reports occurrence to Radiation Oncologist or Nurse: assist in emergency treatment as needed.
- Monitoring radiation safety measures for patients and personnel.
- Assisting in daily quality assurance checks on treatment equipment: immediately reports erratic machine operation to Chief Therapist.
- Assisting in tumor localization and the preparation of immobilization devices: assists in dosimetry procedures.
- Assisting physics in block making and calibration.
- Maintaining orderliness and efficiency of work area.
- Maintaining department records correctly: records daily treatment chart accurately as prescribed.
- Performing patient quality assurance routinely.
- Keeping treatment and simulation rooms supplied with inventory as needed.
- Presenting him/herself in a professional manner and dress at all times in the work place.
- Assisting in orientation of new employees.
- Providing technical direction, guidance and explanation to others.
