About The Position

The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) is responsible for establishing, implementing, and overseeing the radiation safety program at PharmaLogic Facilities in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The RSO serves as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies and ensures the safe handling, use, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials used in radiopharmaceutical compounding and distribution.

Requirements

Minimum 3–5 years of experience in radiation safety, preferably in a nuclear pharmacy or nuclear medicine setting
Thorough knowledge of NRC regulations (10 CFR Parts 19, 20, 30, 35) and/or applicable Agreement State regulations
Familiarity with DOT hazardous materials regulations (49 CFR) as they apply to radioactive materials shipping
Experience managing a radioactive materials license
Demonstrated knowledge of ALARA principles and radiation protection practices
Strong working knowledge of radiation detection instrumentation and dosimetry
Excellent written and verbal communication skills for regulatory correspondence and staff training
High attention to detail and commitment to documentation accuracy
Ability to respond calmly and effectively to radiation incidents or emergencies
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple compliance deadlines
Proficiency with radiation safety software and inventory management systems
Ability to wear radiation monitoring equipment and PPE
May be required to lift shielded containers (up to 30 lbs)
Frequent standing, bending, and working in a controlled-access hot lab environment

Nice To Haves

Experience with PET radiopharmaceuticals (F-18, Ga-68, Zr-89) and generator-produced radionuclides (Tc-99m, Mo-99)
Familiarity with USP <825> standards for radiopharmaceutical compounding

Responsibilities

Maintain and administer the pharmacy's radioactive materials license
Ensure full compliance with NRC, state radiation control program, DOT regulations
Maintain, and implement the Radiation Protection Program (RPP) and all associated SOPs
Prepare and submit license amendments, renewal applications, and regulatory reports as required
Participate in the PharmaLogic Quality and Regulatory audit program
Serve as primary point of contact during regulatory inspections and audits
Implement and enforce ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles throughout all operations
Conduct routine radiation surveys of work areas, equipment, and personnel
Oversee dosimetry program — assign, track, and evaluate personnel radiation dose records (TLD/OSL badges)
Investigate and document radiation incidents, overexposures, and spills; implement corrective actions
Manage radioactive waste program including segregation, decay-in-storage, and disposal procedures
Deliver initial and annual radiation safety training to all radiation workers
Maintain training records in compliance with license requirements
Train staff on proper use of PPE, shielding, and radiation detection instrumentation
Provides clinical support for customers with radiopharmaceutical questions.
Oversee receipt, inventory, storage, and transfer of radioactive materials
Ensure proper labeling, packaging, and shipping of radiopharmaceuticals per DOT/IATA regulations
Maintain accurate and current radioactive material inventory logs
Coordinate with radiopharmaceutical manufacturers and generators on material specifications
Oversee calibration and maintenance of radiation detection instruments (dose calibrators, Geiger counters, well counters)
Ensure hot lab design and shielding meet regulatory and safety standards
Evaluate and approve new procedures or equipment involving radioactive materials
