About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Section Manager, the Radiation Protection Specialist performs tasks associated with the State radiological regulatory control program for licensing, inspecting, and monitoring of facilities that use radioactive materials to ensure compliance with regulations. Additionally, in this role, you will provide technical advice and consultation to health professionals concerning health physics and standards for protection against radiation. This position participates in trainings including independent study activity, formal training courses, and on-the-job training in accordance with the Division’s qualification and training procedures. In this role, you will help protect public health and the environment by ensuring safe, responsible use of radioactive materials across facilities statewide, directly contributing to the Agency’s mission of safeguarding South Carolina’s communities and preventing unnecessary radiation exposure. This position supports the Division of Radioactive Material's Licensing and Compliance within the Bureau of Land & Waste Management.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma and experience in environmental health programs or radiological health.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Strong mathematical skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Agency staff, associates, medical and industrial professionals, government officials and the general public.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive reports.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to clearly communicate inspection results, including issuance of violations, to management and facility personnel.
  • Ability to successfully complete required technical coursework and pass any test relevant to the position within the probationary period or trial period.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, a 10-year driving record that meets State and Agency Fleet guidelines, and the ability to operate a state vehicle.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds and climb ladders and/or stairs.

Nice To Haves

  • A bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences, mathematics, engineering, or a related technical field may be substituted for the required work experience These fields include but are not limited to branches relating to Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, etc. Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
  • Some overnight travel may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate license applications and amendment requests for the use of radioactive materials, including facility design specifications, material utilization, health physics considerations, and security requirements, to ensure all regulatory standards are met.
  • Conduct on-site health and safety inspections and investigations at facilities that use radioactive materials. Inspection activities primarily involve fixed and portable gauging devices and may include diagnostic medical modalities.
  • Review and prepare technical inspection reports documenting compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
  • Initiate and participate in enforcement actions when necessary.
  • Provide technical advice and consultation to health professionals, radiation workers, and the public regarding radiation protection requirements for the use of radioactive materials.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including supporting the Agency’s disaster response, recovery efforts, and emergency preparedness activities. This may include participation in nuclear emergency response drills, exercises, or actual incident response, and may require temporary adjustments to work hours.
