About The Position

The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for the position of Radiation Oncology Assistant. The Radiation Oncology Veterinary Assistant provides integrated clinical and administrative support to the radiation and medical oncology service within the Veterinary Medical Center. This position assists with patient care, supports radiation therapy preparation and procedures, maintains accurate medical documentation, and ensures treatment areas and equipment are prepared and compliant with safety and regulatory standards. The role contributes to efficient patient flow, high-quality care, and a safe clinical environment for patients, clients, and staff. The Veterinary Medical Center is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, and 365 days per year. Occasional weekend, evening, or holiday work may be required of this position.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 1 year of experience in a veterinary clinical setting.
  • Knowledge of veterinary medical terminology and patient care practices.
  • Knowledge of radiation oncology procedures and safety protocols.
  • Skill in organizing, prioritizing, and coordinating multiple tasks in a clinical environment.
  • Skill in maintaining accurate medical records and documentation.
  • Ability to provide compassionate client communication in stressful situations.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and safety procedures.
  • Ability to physically assist with patient handling and equipment movement for extended periods.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment-based visa status.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Technology.
  • Experience in veterinary radiation or medical oncology.
  • Completion of RECOVER training.
  • Completion of veterinary or human radiation therapy training.

Responsibilities

  • Admit and discharge patients in accordance with hospital protocols, including patient identification verification, history collection, and documentation completion.
  • Assist with patient positioning and immobilization under the direction of licensed clinical staff.
  • Assist with patient monitoring during procedures under supervision to support patient comfort and safety.
  • Provide pre- and post-treatment instructions to clients and respond to non-clinical inquiries.
  • Assist the oncology team in implementing patient-specific treatment protocols.
  • Prepare and maintain treatment rooms and radiation therapy equipment for daily use.
  • Clean and maintain immobilization devices and treatment accessories.
  • Perform routine equipment checks and assist with quality assurance activities as directed.
  • Coordinate equipment maintenance, repairs, and supply needs with leadership.
  • Assist with the delivery of radiation therapy procedures, including support of LINAC treatments, under the direct supervision of a radiation oncologist or licensed clinical staff.
  • Transport treatment records, imaging data, and related materials between clinical work areas.
  • Schedule patient appointments and coordinate follow-up visits and post-treatment check-ins.
  • Contact clients prior to appointments to provide instructions and address non-clinical questions.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential patient records in the electronic health record (EHR) system.
  • Prepare and manage treatment documentation, consent forms, and required clinical records.
  • Participate in staff meetings, safety training, and continuing education activities.
  • Follow all hospital, university, and regulatory safety standards, including radiation safety protocols.
  • Assist with inventory management, ordering, and stocking of supplies.
  • Support departmental initiatives and special projects as assigned.
