About The Position

The Outrider is responsible for escorting (while on horseback) Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses to the Post and assists in returning all horses to the unsaddling area. They also assist in the control of any horse that might cause injury to a jockey or others. While working on horseback, the Outrider ensures that the field arrives at the Starting Gate at the scheduled post time. They are present on the racing surface, mounted and ready to assist in the control of any unruly horse or to recapture any loose horse during times when horses are permitted on the racing surface for exercising, training, or racing. The Outrider ensures that all persons exercising horses during training hours or accompanying horses to the Starting Gate during training and/or racing hours wear a protective helmet and vest.
