Requirements

  • One to two years of prior experience in the Horse Racing Industry.
  • Ability to read a Condition Book.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Pennsylvania Rules of Racing.
  • Outstanding guest service skills.
  • Must qualify for a license with the Pennsylvania State Racing Commission and meet any credentialing requirements of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with all morning work in the Racing Secretaries' Office, including rider changes, producing the next day's program, filling entries, and completing the overnight for the following race day.
  • Act as Placing Judge, gathering scratch information and changes, coordinating data into the information system for the official track program, and proofreading data entry.
  • During races, inform patrons of the top four horses by posting numbers on the tote board and TV screens until horses are near the wire. Verify the order of finish with photo finish cameras and order photos for TV display if needed.
  • Act as Paddock Judge, observing horses in the paddock, recording equipment used, and ensuring a responsible trainer or groom is present. Verify published workouts or announce if not available by press time.
  • Act as Identifier, responsible for foal papers, coggins test results, and tattoos to ensure the correct horse is running. Check each horse's tattoo in the paddock at race time.
  • Act as Patrol Judge, gathering, soliciting, and processing horses to card the required amount of races. Assist Stewarts by viewing races from a designated stand and reporting any infractions.
  • Act as Clerk of Scales, processing jockey's riding assignments, verifying rider weight, and relaying changes to Stewarts and the public via the track Announcer. Seek replacement riders or name one if the trainer cannot be reached. Verify riders are in the jockey's quarters at required times.
  • Act as Claims Clerk, delivering claim envelopes to the Steward Stand prior to the race, ensuring claimants are in good standing. Return to the racing office with claims after approval and follow up on necessary actions, especially if multiple claims are made for the same horse.
