About The Position

The R&D Technician II supports the development of new and existing Ruger firearms by conducting testing, validation, data collection, and technical analysis. This role is hands‑on, detail‑driven, and central to ensuring that prototypes and production models meet performance, reliability, and safety standards. The technician works closely with engineers, designers, and quality teams to turn design intent into verified, field‑ready products.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, tolerances, and materials.
  • Familiarity with firearm operation, maintenance, and safety.
  • Proficiency with calipers, gauges, microscopes, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to interpret test results and communicate findings clearly.
  • Consistent accuracy in documentation and inspection.
  • Ability to lift equipment, work on a firing range, and handle repetitive assembly tasks.
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years old.
  • Must be able to pass a background and drug screen.

Nice To Haves

  • Range Safety Officer (RSO) certification – Will train the right candidate.
  • Prior work in firearms manufacturing, ballistics testing, R&D labs, or quality assurance
  • Experience with instrumented testing, high‑speed video and pressure measurement systems
  • Machining, gunsmithing, or mechanical assembly background
  • Familiarity with ISO, SAAMI, or mil‑spec testing standards

Responsibilities

  • Perform controlled live‑fire evaluations, endurance tests, accuracy assessments, and environmental stress tests on prototype and production firearms.
  • Record performance metrics, malfunctions, wear patterns, and ballistic outcomes using standardized methods and instrumentation.
  • Configure fixtures, high‑speed cameras, pressure sensors, chronographs, and other diagnostic tools.
  • Inspect components for wear, deformation, or breakage; document findings and support root‑cause investigations.
  • Assemble, disassemble, and modify firearms and components according to engineering instructions.
  • Produce clear test reports, logs, and summaries for engineering review.
  • Maintain strict adherence to range protocols, PPE requirements, and company safety standards.
  • An individual must also be of integrity and always maintain confidentiality.
  • Work with design, manufacturing, and quality teams to refine test plans and support product development cycles.
