About The Position

The Quantum Communications and Networking Group, within the Quantum Information Sciences Section, Computational Sciences and Engineering Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, is seeking a research and development (R&D) Scientist. This role involves participating in research on classical and quantum optics communications and sensing projects, formulating novel solutions to problems of national interest, and supporting their practical implementation. The scientist will also participate in field testing and demonstrations, interpret and report research results to national audiences, and publish peer-reviewed papers and technical reports.

Requirements

  • A PhD in physics, optics, electrical engineering, or a related field completed within the last 10 years.

Nice To Haves

  • General research experiences in classical and quantum optics, optical sensing, and quantum information science.
  • Proven experience designing, building, testing, and integrating novel quantum and/or classical optical communications and sensing hardware in critical infrastructure and/or extreme (heat, electrical, high pressure, vacuum, radiation) environments.
  • Experience with data analysis using MATLAB or Python.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Proven ability to conduct field work in austere environments.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-placement drug test and participate in an ongoing random drug testing program.
  • May be subject to random polygraph testing due to the SCI clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in new and ongoing research on classical and quantum optics communications and sensing projects.
  • Formulate novel classical and quantum optical sensing solutions to problems of national interest and support the research and development necessary for the practical implementation of those solutions.
  • Participate in field testing and demonstrations.
  • Interpret, report, and present research concepts and results to national audiences at all levels.
  • Write peer-reviewed papers and technical reports for internal and external release and represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums.
