About The Position

The Global R&D team, located in Kennesaw, GA has an opportunity to participate in our summer 2027 intern program. The team is seeking an engineering intern that can join the team for approximately 12 weeks. This role is responsible for working with the laboratory team to characterize and investigate surface chemistry, coatings, rolling lubricants, and other materials as related to rolling and finishing of aluminum, aluminum recycling, and process troubleshooting.

Requirements

Currently enrolled in an accredited four-year university pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field
Must have completed at least sophomore year by the start of the internship
Ability to work full-time for approximately 12 weeks during the summer 2027 internship program
Basic understanding of chemistry, laboratory practices, data collection, and technical problem solving
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written procedures, safety requirements, and experimental instructions
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
Must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer

Nice To Haves

Junior or senior academic standing preferred
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks, samples, and data sets
Coursework or experience in organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, materials science, polymers, coatings, or surface science
Previous laboratory experience through coursework, research, co-op, internship, or academic projects
Experience with laboratory instrumentation or analytical techniques such as FTIR, GC-FID or GC-MS, microscopy, spectroscopy, titration, or wet chemistry preferred
Ability to analyze technical data, summarize findings, and communicate results clearly to technical and non-technical audiences
Curiosity, initiative, and interest in aluminum processing, recycling, sustainability, and industrial R&D

Responsibilities

Complete all required safety training and follow Novelis laboratory safety procedures, including proper use of PPE and safe chemical handling practices
Complete training in laboratory techniques and analytical methods needed to support assigned projects
Perform laboratory testing in a safe, responsible, and accurate manner to support characterization of surface chemistry, coatings, rolling lubricants, and related materials
Operate and support routine use of laboratory instruments and equipment under supervision
Collect, organize, and analyze laboratory data to identify trends, compare results, and support technical conclusions
Document experimental work, observations, and results clearly in laboratory notebooks, data files, and summary reports
Prepare detailed technical summaries and present findings to laboratory team members and project stakeholders
Assist with laboratory organization and general housekeeping to maintain an efficient working environment
Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and technologists to support R&D projects, process troubleshooting, and continuous improvement activities
