About The Position

This entry-level engineering position supports the design, construction, modification, and commissioning of pilot plants and laboratory equipment used in Research and Development. Working under the guidance of experienced engineers and project leaders, the engineer applies sound engineering practices, a strong safety mindset, and hands-on technical skills to help deliver safe, reliable, cost-effective systems that meet project, environmental, and operational requirements.

Requirements

  • 6 months + Academic, internship, co-op, laboratory, shop, or project experience applying engineering fundamentals to equipment, process systems, fabrication, or construction.
  • 6 months + experience mechanical hands-on engineering work.
  • 6 months + Working safely and effectively in pilot plant, laboratory, shop, and active construction environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Working knowledge gained through coursework or practical experience in machining, welding, piping, electrical systems, instrumentation, or construction methods.
  • Familiarity with engineering drawings, equipment layouts, process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, or computer-aided design tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document technical work clearly.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate in a team environment and manage multiple assignments with guidance.
  • Exposure to project execution, equipment procurement, contractor coordination, commissioning, or startup activities.
  • Knowledge of Lean Six Sigma or other continuous-improvement methods; Green Belt certification is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design, construction, installation, startup, and modification of pilot plants and laboratory equipment for Research and Development programs.
  • Prepare and update engineering deliverables such as equipment specifications, design calculations, drawings, bills of materials, construction packages, and project documentation under appropriate technical guidance.
  • Apply company health, safety, and environmental policies, engineering standards, and applicable regulations throughout design and construction activities.
  • Participate in design reviews, hazard reviews, field walkdowns, equipment inspections, testing, commissioning, and readiness activities to help ensure systems can be operated safely and reliably.
  • Coordinate day-to-day technical activities with engineers, researchers, technicians, craftspeople, vendors, contractors, and other cross-functional team members.
  • Assist with project planning, cost estimates, schedules, procurement, resource needs, and tracking for capital and expense projects.
  • Evaluate practical design and fabrication alternatives, including in-house and external options, for pilot plants and laboratory equipment.
  • Provide field support during fabrication and construction, helping resolve technical issues involving piping, mechanical equipment, welding, machining, electrical systems, instrumentation, and general construction.
  • Contribute to Lean Six Sigma and other continuous-improvement efforts that reduce design cycle time, construction cost, rework, and project risk.
  • Communicate project status, technical findings, risks, and recommended actions clearly in written and verbal updates.
