About The Position

The R&D Analog Hardware System Electrical Engineer is responsible for electronics design, development, maintenance, and enhancement of MAXUM process Gas Chromatographs (GCs). The role works with a cross-functional team and reports to the R&D hardware manager. The GC is a complex instrument involving low-level measurements, pressure and temperature control, multiple processors, and digital communication; this position is responsible for its electronic functions, with particular emphasis on analog circuits. The engineer develops new and existing product designs and supports their lifecycle from design and testing through production. The position is primarily based in the Houston, Texas area and requires up to 10% travel, some of which may be international. Applicants must be living in and authorized to work in the United States. International relocation is not available.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of experience in hardware/system design.
  • BSEE from an accredited university program.
  • Specialization in system-level design of highly sensitive measurement or process instruments, or systems of similar complexity.
  • Experience with equipment that strongly incorporates analog measurements and a deep understanding of analog circuits.
  • Ability to design analog and digital PCBs and FPGAs.
  • Hands-on experience with electronic PCB design, layout, prototyping, troubleshooting, and manufacturing.
  • Experience with electronics design for hazardous areas, including Intrinsic Safety, NRTL, IECEx, and ATEX.
  • Ability to work independently with limited day-to-day direction while staying connected with local, remote, and international teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including communication by email, phone, and remote meeting platforms such as MS Teams.
  • Ability to write and present thorough analyses and reports for internal documentation and safety certification.
  • Good understanding of the physics and mechanical, non-electrical aspects of a product and its application.
  • Must be living in and authorized to work in the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Altium/Protel design tools or similar schematic and PCB tools.
  • Experience in FPGA design.
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering, including materials and fluid/heat flow, or of physics or chemistry.
  • Cross-disciplinary knowledge in electrical, mechanical, and physics/chemistry fields.

Responsibilities

  • Develop process instrument detectors, interface modules, processing functions, displays, network devices, and associated systems.
  • Design, develop, test, and modify complex analog and digital electronic printed circuit boards and modules for process analyzers across new and existing product lines.
  • Coordinate with the software development group on the design and testing of embedded solutions.
  • Manage product lifecycle activities and introduce new designs into production while ensuring design integrity, manufacturability, and smooth execution.
  • Guide certification of the electrical portions of products, including safety, EMC, and environmental certification.
  • Help set new directions for the GC product.
  • Lead small design teams.
  • Prepare and present thorough analyses and reports for internal documentation and safety certification.
  • Recognize opportunities, propose projects, and implement the resulting work.

Benefits

  • Generous wage and benefits package.
  • 401k with company match.
  • Company-funded pension.
