About The Position

The Department of Modern Languages & Literatures at Santa Clara University seeks applicants for Quarterly Lecturer (non-tenure track) positions to teach courses in German Studies during the 2026-2027 academic year. The university operates on a quarter system, with each quarter lasting 10 weeks followed by an 11th week for final examinations. All classes are intended to be in-person, but may transition online if county health and university conditions necessitate. Successful candidates will teach a maximum of two courses per quarter and no more than four courses total across the fall, winter, and spring quarters.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in German Studies with native- or near-native level fluency in German and English.
  • Candidates with ABD or MA and commensurate teaching experience in German Studies or closely-related field (5-7 years of college or professional teaching) will be considered.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching German at the college/university level.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Must be able to provide evidence of identity and legal authorization to work in the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise in Second-language acquisition & pedagogy.
  • Expertise and experience with ACTFL Standards-based teaching and assessment and instructional technologies.
  • A strong interdisciplinary background and ability to teach courses that connect with other disciplines (STEM, Business, Public Health, Women’s and Gender Studies, Art and Art History, Film Studies) and SCU Centers of Distinction (Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education, Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship, Markkula Center for Applied Ethics) are also highly desirable.
  • Experience with inclusive pedagogical practices that promote access and academic success for all students.
  • Experience teaching and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduate students.
  • Record of excellence in teaching German courses at least two or more years at the University level (in addition to TA experience).

Responsibilities

  • Teach no more than two courses per quarter and no more than four courses over three academic quarters (fall, winter, spring).
  • Conduct and appear at all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared manner that demonstrates a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively.
  • Assign and evaluate assignments that align with the course description and course learning outcomes, and provide timely feedback to students.
  • Hold regular weekly office hours on campus.
  • Submit student grades that are appropriate, accurate and fair measures of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadline.
  • Administer numerical and narrative evaluations for all courses.
  • Teach from an approved syllabus for the University Core courses assigned or work with the Chair to design an appropriate syllabus for submission for approval from the relevant Faculty Core Curriculum Committee.
  • Work in conjunction with the Language coordinator on course development, pedagogy and assessment.
