Quantum Computer Deployment Physicist - 1100

Quantinuum•Brooklyn Park, MN
•$159,000 - $214,000•Remote

About The Position

Quantinuum is seeking a Quantum Computer Deployment Physicist to install and service Helios quantum computers worldwide. The position may be based at a U.S. Quantinuum office or remotely from an approved U.S. location where business requirements allow. The successful candidate will develop deep familiarity with Helios hardware and software by participating in system integration, validation, commissioning, and shipment-readiness activities across Quantinuum sites, both in person and remotely. The role focuses on installation, commissioning, validation, and acceptance activities at customer facilities. The physicist will serve as a technical authority for quantum system performance during deployments and work with experts in atomic physics, hardware, software, controls, lasers, cryogenics, and systems engineering. The role also contributes field experience and technical expertise to the design, execution, serviceability, and scalability of future on-premises quantum computing offerings. The position includes extensive international travel for major customer deployments and business-critical installations. Assignments may require on-site presence for several weeks to multiple months, with remote or office-based work between deployments. Outside active deployment periods, travel is expected to be approximately 25%, depending on program needs, training, customer support, and future installation planning. Applicants for safety-sensitive positions must complete a pre-employment drug test.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. required.
  • At least 7 years of relevant post-graduate experience, inclusive of M.S. or Ph.D. experience, as a technical contributor or leader in atomic physics, trapped-ion systems, quantum computing, advanced experimental physics, or a related technical discipline.
  • Ability and willingness to complete international travel, including extended customer-site deployments.
  • Must be a U.S. Person as defined in the posting: a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or green card holder, or worker granted asylum or refugee status.
  • Due to U.S. Government national security requirements, candidates must not be a People's Republic of China national or Russian national unless also a U.S. citizen.

Nice To Haves

  • Deep knowledge of trapped-ion technology, high-performance quantum computing, and technical hardware integration and validation.
  • Ability to work effectively across global teams, customer sites, laboratory environments, and deployment settings.
  • A track record of atomic physics research and development demonstrated through scholarly publications, successful program execution, and/or launched products.
  • Experience with lasers, laser cooling, atom trapping, cryogenics, ultra-high vacuum systems, analog and digital electronics, laboratory hardware control, Python, physical modelling, and data analysis.
  • A strong drive to exceed performance and schedule expectations.
  • Commitment to documenting work through shared note-taking and creating and maintaining standard work documentation, test plans, troubleshooting guides, and configuration documentation.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare Helios systems for shipment, relocation, installation, bring-up, validation, and customer acceptance.
  • Serve as the deployment team's subject matter expert for atomic physics, trapped-ion operations, and qubit performance, providing technical leadership during integration and validation activities.
  • Own deployment success criteria related to quantum system performance, validation, verification, and customer acceptance testing.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex issues involving quantum hardware, controls, software, optics, vacuum systems, electronics, and supporting infrastructure.
  • Lead technical decision-making during high-pressure integration and validation periods at Quantinuum and customer sites.
  • Participate in integration and validation of Helios systems at Quantinuum before deployment.
  • Provide remote support and on-site service for deployed Helios systems, working with subject matter experts and a global technical team.
  • Train internal team members and, where appropriate, customer personnel on deployment processes, validation workflows, operational readiness, and best practices.
  • Improve deployment plans, standard work, work instructions, test plans, troubleshooting guides, configuration documentation, and validation processes.
  • Partner with engineering, product, operations, and service teams to turn field lessons into product and deployment improvements.
  • Contribute to future on-premises hardware beyond Helios, including design-for-deployment, execution planning, commissioning strategy, and serviceability improvements.
  • Maintain a focus on business success, technical progress, customer outcomes, safety, documentation, and professional collaboration.
