Quantum Computer Deployment Physicist - 1100

Quantinuum•US Brooklyn Park, MN
•$159,000 - $214,000•Remote

About The Position

Quantinuum is seeking a Quantum Computer Deployment Physicist to install and service Helios quantum computer systems worldwide. The position may be based at a U.S. Quantinuum office or remotely from an approved location where business requirements allow. The role includes system integration, validation, commissioning, and shipment-readiness activities across Quantinuum sites, followed by critical installation, commissioning, validation, and acceptance work at customer facilities. The successful candidate will serve as a technical authority for quantum system performance during deployments and collaborate with specialists in atomic physics, hardware, software, controls, lasers, cryogenics, and systems engineering. The position also contributes to future on-premises quantum computing offerings by applying deployment experience and field feedback to system design, execution, serviceability, and scalability. Extensive international travel is required for major deployments, with on-site assignments typically lasting several weeks to multiple months. Between deployments, work may be remote or office-based; travel is expected to be approximately 25% outside active deployment periods, depending on program needs. Applicants for this safety-sensitive position must complete a pre-employment drug test. Due to contractual requirements, candidates must be U.S. persons as defined in the posting, and additional nationality restrictions apply unless the candidate is also a U.S. citizen. A Ph.D. is required, along with at least seven years of relevant post-graduate experience, inclusive of M.S. or Ph.D. experience, as a technical contributor or leader in atomic physics, trapped-ion systems, quantum computing, advanced experimental physics, or a related discipline. The role is bonus- and equity-eligible, with a stated base salary range of $159,000–$214,000 annually. Actual compensation may vary based on skills, education, experience, and qualifications.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. required.
  • At least 7 years of relevant post-graduate experience, inclusive of M.S. or Ph.D. experience, as a technical contributor or leader in atomic physics, trapped-ion systems, quantum computing, advanced experimental physics, or a related technical discipline.
  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally, including extended customer-site deployments.
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined in the posting: a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or green card holder, or worker granted asylum or refugee status.
  • Candidates must not be a People's Republic of China national or Russian national unless also a U.S. citizen, due to stated U.S. Government national security requirements.
  • Must complete a pre-employment drug test for placement in this safety-sensitive position.

Nice To Haves

  • Deep knowledge of trapped-ion technology, high-performance quantum computing, and technical hardware integration and validation.
  • Ability to work effectively across global teams, customer sites, laboratory environments, and deployment settings.
  • A track record of atomic physics research and development, evidenced by scholarly publications, successful program execution, and/or launched products.
  • Experience with lasers, laser cooling, atom trapping, cryogenics, ultra-high-vacuum systems, analog and digital electronics, laboratory hardware control, Python, physical modelling, and data analysis.
  • A strong drive to exceed performance and schedule expectations.
  • Commitment to documenting work through shared note-taking and creating and maintaining standard work documentation, test plans, troubleshooting guides, and configuration documentation.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare Helios systems for shipment, relocation, installation, bring-up, validation, and customer acceptance.
  • Serve as the deployment team's subject matter expert for atomic physics, trapped-ion operations, and qubit performance, providing technical leadership during integration and validation.
  • Own deployment success criteria related to quantum-system performance, validation, verification, and customer acceptance testing.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex issues involving quantum hardware, controls, software, optics, vacuum systems, electronics, and supporting infrastructure.
  • Lead technical decision-making during high-pressure integration and validation periods at Quantinuum and customer sites.
  • Participate in integration and validation of Helios systems at Quantinuum before deployment.
  • Provide remote support and on-site service for deployed Helios systems, working with subject matter experts and the global technical team.
  • Train internal team members and, where appropriate, customer personnel on deployment processes, validation workflows, operational readiness, and best practices.
  • Improve deployment plans, standard work, work instructions, test plans, troubleshooting guides, configuration documentation, and validation processes.
  • Work with engineering, product, operations, and service teams to translate field lessons into product and deployment improvements.
  • Contribute to future on-premises hardware offerings, including design-for-deployment, execution planning, commissioning strategy, and serviceability improvements.
  • Maintain focus on business success, technical progress, customer outcomes, safety, documentation, and professional collaboration.
  • Complete international travel, including extended customer-site deployments.
