Quantitative Analyst

Morningstar•Chicago, IL
•$92,300 - $135,383•Hybrid

About The Position

Morningstar’s Analytics group develops methodologies, analytics, and insights across securities and portfolios to help investors make better decisions. The Equity Analytics team owns and advances Morningstar’s proprietary equity research intellectual property, including valuation, business analysis, business classification, company narrative, and portfolio-level aggregation of foundational equity data. The Quantitative Analyst works on defined research tasks, turning holdings, equity data, and company filings into high-quality, actionable analytics and supporting the validation of models in production. The role involves independent work on assigned tasks and collaboration with senior analysts and a manager on judgment calls, priorities, and open questions. The position is based in Morningstar’s Chicago office and requires working in-office four days per week.

Requirements

  • Strong foundation in equity fundamentals, including financial statement analysis, valuation, and business drivers, combined with a quantitative mindset and interest in how investors use company-level data.
  • Strong Python and SQL skills and ability to work independently with large, varied datasets.
  • Rigorous, skeptical approach to research, including testing assumptions and validating findings throughout the task lifecycle.
  • Comfort with ambiguity in data, including gaps, inconsistencies, and edge cases, even when task goals are well defined.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including ability to explain analysis and reasoning to senior colleagues.
  • Familiarity with using AI tools to support research, coding, or validation work.
  • 2–5 years of experience in quantitative research, equity analysis, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Run the full lifecycle of research tasks, including pulling and exploring data, assessing data quality and fitness for purpose, proposing and testing approaches, and refining work based on results.
  • Build analytics across the team’s core intellectual property: valuation, business analysis, business classification, company narrative, and portfolio-level aggregations of equity data.
  • Develop expertise in how investors use equity analytics to understand stock exposure within a fund or portfolio, and propose improved ways to surface insights.
  • Support ongoing model validation, including pre-launch checks on new methodology and investigation and resolution of issues arising in production.
  • Maintain clear, well-documented code and analysis that can be reviewed, reused, and handed off.
  • Flag edge cases, data issues, and methodology questions to senior analysts rather than resolving ambiguous judgment calls alone.
  • Contribute to peer review of other analysts’ work and remain open to review of own work.
  • Stay current on the team’s methodologies and tools, including AI-assisted approaches used in research and validation.
