About The Position

Base is hiring a Quantitative Analyst for its Risk & Trading team. The role builds and improves models for Base’s Trading & Risk platform, which supports a distributed battery fleet and the households it serves. The analyst will own wholesale-market price models that identify value and hedging strategies that translate analysis into plans for managing risk. This mid-to-senior role combines quantitative analysis, software engineering, and energy-market expertise. Base has an existing ERCOT price model that serves as a foundation for further work. The analyst will extend price modeling to PJM, improve the capture of grid congestion, and use those models to shape PJM hedging strategy. The Risk & Trading team turns the grid-service capabilities of Base’s distributed battery fleet into revenue. It develops and evaluates models that guide participation in markets and products, from real-time arbitrage to multi-year distribution deals. The analyst will work alongside traders, market operations engineers, and policy leads. Base is a startup where priorities may shift, and responsibilities may expand or change with business needs. The company works in person and describes its work as not being a 9-to-5.

Requirements

  • Understand wholesale energy-market operations, including ERCOT, real-time arbitrage, ancillary services, capacity, unit commitment, economic dispatch, and production cost modeling.
  • Build models in Python or another programming language, retrieve data using SQL, and work through a model independently.
  • Understand the bias-variance tradeoff, train/validation/test evaluation, and loss functions for categorical and continuous targets.
  • Have deep familiarity with at least one statistical subfield, such as extreme value theory, information theory, or stochastic processes.
  • Have deployed models to production with versioning and maintenance, and scaled training beyond a single machine.
  • Know Python, pandas, and visualization libraries well.

Responsibilities

  • Improve Base’s price distributions by capturing grid congestion effects, including midday price excursions that current models miss.
  • Build a PJM price model so Base can track risk and make hedging decisions there as it does in ERCOT.
  • Build a PJM hedging strategy using the models developed for the market.
