About The Position

The Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA) is a dairy farmer-owned cooperative and dairy processor founded in 1916. Its wholly owned subsidiary, Superior Dairy, founded in 1922, processes and bottles member milk into trusted dairy products. This position provides leadership and direction for all food safety, quality assurance, laboratory, and regulatory compliance programs within the facility. The role ensures compliance with SQF, FSMA, PMO, FDA, customer, and company requirements through effective management of quality systems, HACCP programs, prerequisite programs, laboratory operations, audit readiness, and continuous improvement initiatives. The goal is to ensure the production of safe and high-quality dairy products while fostering a culture of food safety, quality excellence, and regulatory compliance.

Requirements

  • BS Degree in Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry or Food Science required.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes
  • Food Safety and Regulatory requirements

Responsibilities

  • Work with the plant leadership team to ensure all quality and food safety programs are effectively implemented and maintained.
  • Serve as the plant PMO Coordinator, ensuring compliance with all applicable Pasteurized Milk Ordinance (PMO) requirements through routine verification, record review, facility inspections, and employee training.
  • Act as SQF Practitioner/Coordinator for the Canton Plant and ensure Food Safety and Quality Systems meet or exceed internal, customer, regulatory, and third-party audit requirements.
  • Manage the plant's internal auditing program by conducting GMP, sanitation, and food safety audits of operations and warehouse areas.
  • Lead plant preparation and regulatory readiness for PMO, FDA, state regulatory, customer, and third-party inspections and audits.
  • Maintain authority for product hold, release, disposition, and food safety decision-making to ensure compliance with customer, regulatory, and company requirements.
  • Coordinate product traceability exercises and mock recalls to verify effectiveness of the plant's recall program.
  • Monitor and verify compliance of pasteurization systems, CIP systems, allergen controls, HACCP plans, Food Defense, Food Fraud, and Preventive Controls programs.
  • Manage environmental monitoring programs, including sampling, trend analysis, corrective actions, and verification activities.
  • Own the plant's Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) process and track root cause investigations and effectiveness verification activities.
  • Investigate and lead customer complaint resolution activities in a timely and effective manner.
  • Review and trend quality and food safety data, including KPI performance, to identify risks and opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Maintain product specifications, formulations, and regulatory documentation.
  • Maintain effective communication with suppliers and customers regarding quality, food safety, and documentation requests.
  • Define laboratory best practices and ensure adherence to quality policies and procedures.
  • Manage laboratory personnel, testing activities, and interpretation of analytical results.
  • Ensure microbiological, chemical, sensory, and environmental testing is performed in accordance with approved methods and regulatory requirements.
  • Review laboratory results and trends and initiate corrective actions when adverse trends or out-of-specification results occur.
  • Ensure laboratory equipment calibration, verification, and proficiency programs are maintained and effective.
  • Develop and maintain plant procedures in accordance with MMPA's Quality Management System and associated policies.
  • Manage Food Safety documentation, including SSOPs, HACCP plans, PMO records, specifications, environmental monitoring records, and other regulatory documentation.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation and record retention practices are maintained to support regulatory, customer, and audit compliance.
  • Utilize Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365) to accurately maintain quality records, track data, and support compliance activities.
  • Manage quality and food safety training programs for all plant personnel.
  • Develop and deliver training related to PMO requirements, HACCP, SQF, GMPs, sanitation, allergen management, Food Defense, Food Fraud, and food safety culture.
  • Serve as a technical resource for food safety, quality, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Direct management of laboratory staff.
  • Ability to influence plant leadership and workforce through effective communication and collaboration.
  • Communicate technical information and quality expectations in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Assess risk and ensure timely communication of food safety and quality concerns.
  • Function as a change agent and champion of continuous improvement and food safety culture.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
