About The Position

The Quality Coordinator has responsibility for the development, implementation, and monitoring of quality improvement and patient safety activities for a designated quality collaborative/registry. The Michigan Spine Surgery Improvement Collaborative (MSSIC) is a statewide quality improvement collaborative funded by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan/Blue Care Network involving neurosurgeons and orthopaedic surgeons across the state of Michigan with the aim of improving the quality of care of spine surgery. The objective of this collaborative is to heighten patient care outcomes while consequently increasing efficiency of treatment. The MSSIC Quality Coordinator is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and reporting clinical data elements for cases eligible for inclusion in the MSSIC data registry. Through application of clinical knowledge and analysis of MSSIC registry date, the position is also required to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and other special projects as requested by the MSSIC Coordinating Center. The Quality Coordinator will work collaboratively with fellow team members and with physicians, nurses, other clinicians and administrators to develop quality improvement strategies for spine surgery.

Requirements

• Current Michigan RN license
• Minimum 2 years of direct clinical patient care experience required.
• Previous experience with clinical chart review, data abstraction from medical records, and/or analyzing and interpreting processes of care and clinical outcomes
• Ability to work independently and effectively manage multiple competing/shifting priorities and deadlines with minimal direct supervision.
• Evidence of ability to assess competing priorities, manage workflow and meet operational deadlines in a complex organization.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral) and the ability to successfully work with multidisciplinary teams.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Suites (e.g., Docs, Sheets, Drive), DropBox, and Zoom.

Nice To Haves

• Clinical experience in spine patient care - preferred.
• Knowledge of spine-related medical terminology preferred.
• Experience with data collection in clinical research or quality improvement.
• Experience with quality improvement implementation.
• Collaborative Quality Improvement (CQI) project experience.

Responsibilities

• Collecting, analyzing and reporting clinical data elements on eligible cases as required for participation in the Michigan Spine Surgery Improvement Collaborative (MSSIC), a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan-funded Collaborative Quality Initiative (CQI).
• The Quality Coordinator will be required to independently manage the case load and report data to MSSIC according to established standard and deadlines.
• The Quality Coordinator will actively engage in MSSIC activities and identify opportunities to improve the quality of care in the inpatient setting by working with physicians, nurses, other clinicians, and administrators to develop strategies to improve performance.
• Other responsibilities will include attending consortium-wide meetings and data abstractor meetings as a representative of the institution, acting as a resource regarding the consortium within the institution, maintaining regular contact with the MSSIC clinical champion(s) and other members of the team at the institution, preparing for and being available for site audits by the MSSIC Coordinating Center, resolving data discrepancies, and responding to Coordinating Center requests in a timely fashion.
• Maintains current knowledge of laws, regulations, healthcare trends and accreditation standards; provides education, and coordinates the preparation, monitoring, and developing of mechanisms to comply with standards and surveys.
• Acts as a consultant, educator, and facilitator for quality improvement and patient safety initiatives for hospital staff and physicians that include, but are not limited to: Quality improvement and patient safety, Adverse Event Analysis, Peer Review, Morbidity and Mortality, Clinical documentation, Multi-disciplinary quality improvement team activities.
• Identifies/develops aggregate summaries of Quality Improvement data and information as needed, that includes but is not limited to: Departmental quality improvement activities, Medical staff quality improvement activities, Committee quality improvement activities, Outside organizational information, Benchmark activities, Public reporting of quality data.
