About The Position

The 2nd Shift Quality Control Technician serves as a key point of contact for end-of-day specimen reconciliation and quality assurance within the laboratory. This role ensures that all samples are accurately processed, verified, and accounted for prior to laboratory closure. The position requires a high level of independence, attention to detail, and strong problem-solving skills during the evening shift.

Requirements

High School Diploma required
Strong computer proficiency and organizational skills
Working knowledge of laboratory equipment relevant to the role
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace
Typing speed of at least 40 WPM

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience preferred
Medical background preferred, including knowledge of clinical laboratory terminology
Previous experience in a production-based environment preferred

Responsibilities

Demonstrate proficiency in data entry, specimen processing, and quality control functions, including a full understanding of all job duties and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to accessioning, preparation, and reconciliation.
Receive and accession incoming specimens during the closing shift by completing electronic requisitions, printing barcodes, and entering data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
Validate specimen information, patient demographics, billing details, and test orders for accuracy; report inconsistencies to laboratory leadership.
Identify and resolve specimen-related issues, including missing information, complex test-to-specimen relationships, and compliance concerns.
Track and monitor quality control metrics, maintain accurate logs, and collaborate with leadership to ensure high-quality specimen processing and data accuracy.
Communicate issues that may impact patient results in a timely manner.
Facilitate effective communication between laboratory staff and external stakeholders regarding specimen status, test results, and end-of-day discrepancies.
Keep leadership informed of inconsistencies or quality concerns and contribute to performance improvements through SOP development, updates, and quality initiatives.
Complete required documentation accurately and within established timeframes; maintain LIS databases to support proper specimen processing and reconciliation.
Review requisitions and test orders for completeness and accuracy; validate and verify work completed by other staff as needed.
Provide training support and assist with shipment preparation to maintain specimen integrity.
Demonstrate knowledge of specimen testing requirements and compliance policies, including use of laboratory systems, translation tables, and directories of services.
Adhere to all laboratory policies and procedures, including safety standards, confidentiality requirements (HIPAA), OSHA regulations, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Maintain safe work practices in a biohazard environment.
Perform additional duties as assigned, including coverage during staffing shortages and assistance with shipment receipt and delivery.
