About The Position

This position is responsible for producing quality, safe, and legal products that meet or exceed customer specifications. The role involves supervising and conducting physical and chemical analyses of raw materials, in-process, and finished products. The supervisor acts as a backup for the Quality Manager, is responsible for the plant's ISO 9000 Quality system, and ensures adherence to related SOPs. Additionally, the role provides inventory and production planning support, directs the work of one Laboratory Technician, and oversees the daily activities of the Main Laboratory and Control Room Laboratory to ensure product quality and customer satisfaction. Continuous improvement projects for laboratory processes and procedures are a key part of the role, as is interfacing with customers to provide quality information and coordinating lotting and shipments. The position also serves as a backup for the Traffic and Inventory Coordinator.

Requirements

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • 3 – 5 years’ experience in chemicals manufacturing or related field.
  • Demonstrate team and leadership skills.
  • Experience in calibration, troubleshooting instrument issues, and analytical methods.
  • Attention to detail, adaptability, being a self-starter, and good communication skills (verbal and written) are essential.
  • Ability to act independently and on one’s own initiative
  • Good mathematical abilities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Must be physically capable of spending long hours standing and sitting.
  • Must be “fit for duty”.
  • Ability to work as a TEAM member within the facility and other labs within Chemtrade.

Nice To Haves

  • BS degree in Engineering preferred
  • SAP S4 experience.
  • Experience with ISO 9001, RC 14001, or similar management system

Responsibilities

  • Supervising and conducting the physical and chemical analyses of raw materials, in-process and finished products.
  • Acting for the Quality Manager in their absence or when responsibilities are delegated.
  • Being responsible for the plant’s ISO 9000 Quality system.
  • Ensuring all ISO 9000 SOPs pertaining to safety, operations, and personal conduct are followed.
  • Providing inventory and production planning support through assignment and tracking of lots including label control.
  • Directing the work of one Laboratory Technician.
  • Overseeing the day-to-day activities of the Main Laboratory and Control Room Laboratory to assure product quality and customer satisfaction.
  • Continually working on improvement projects to upgrade processes and procedures associated with the Laboratories.
  • Interfacing with customers to provide quality information.
  • Coordinating SBS lotting and shipments with the customer.
  • Serving as a backup for the Traffic and Inventory Coordinator.
  • Developing written test procedures as per compendia methods.
  • Training Analysts on approved test procedures and providing written documentation of training.
  • Providing annual certification of Analysts qualifications on compendia methods.
  • Verifying that analysts are performing tests as per written procedures.
  • Reviewing current test procedures for accuracy.
  • Coordinating analyses on Raw Materials, in-process and finished products in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Investigating out of specification laboratory results and providing written documentation for Operations Manager and storing on DMS (SharePoint).
  • Coordinating outside laboratory testing and reports/results.
  • Analyzing product to verify quality.
  • Managing Main Laboratory and Control Room Laboratory inventory.
  • Obtaining quotes on Laboratory materials, creating purchase requisitions, and receiving orders.
  • Keeping instruments in good repair and ordering new equipment, as needed.
  • Coordinating maintenance of equipment, as needed.
  • Following through with vendor recommended action plan, as needed.
  • Writing and revising Laboratory procedures for both the Main Laboratory and the Control Room Laboratory, as needed.
  • Maintaining customer specifications and COAs (Certificate of Analysis).
  • Coordinating updating customer specifications within SAP.
  • Working closely with the customers to address quality issues and providing COAs (Certificate of Analysis) on each shipment.
  • Training new Laboratory Personnel, as needed.
  • Training Operators, Pumpers, Utility Mechanics, as needed.
  • Escalating any quality issues to Staff/On-Call/Operators/Pumpers/Utility Mechanics.
  • Preparing and arranging shipment of Laboratory samples.
  • Analyzing storm water and summarizing them for the monthly DMR (Discharge Monitoring Report) submittal.
  • Introducing new chemicals, as needed, for Laboratory operation.
  • Collaborating with Traffic & Inventory Clerk, Operations, and Pumpers.
  • Collaborating with Chemtrade Central Lab, as needed.
  • Providing analytical support and assistance when troubleshooting plant operations.
  • Performing minor repairs and preventive maintenance on complex analytical equipment.
  • Helping to ensure all lab operations meet or exceed environmental and safety regulations.
  • Conducting interaction modeling of manufactured products at site, including set up, analytical measurements and follow on data evaluations, summary and distribution.
  • Conducting detailed investigation into alternate methodology to achieve customer specifications, including interface with instrumentation manufacturer, method development and detailed verification - QA/QC efforts related to new procedure set up.
  • Investigating laboratory hazardous waste reduction.
  • Generating and implementing improvement projects associated with the Main Laboratory and Control Room Laboratory.
  • Implementing new maintenance procedures/practices for laboratory equipment.
  • Partnering with main lab to support initiatives.
  • Participating in Lean Six Sigma events for process improvements.
  • Being responsible for the maintenance of the NSF system at site, including accurate reviews of raw materials, ensuring proper updates are made to each registered formulations, accurate upkeep of the all NSF files, submission of the required annual samples and direct interface with the auditors.
  • Being responsible for the ISO laboratory calibrations systems.
  • Leading plant quality management system by communicating with registrar and auditors, maintaining corrective/preventive action system, scheduling internal audits, and facilitating quarterly management reviews.
  • Serving as back up to Traffic & Inventory Coordinator during vacations/illness.
